So now we know the facts: In an audio tape posted on the Internet late Tuesday, a speaker claiming to be bin Laden said that neither Zacarias Moussaoui _ the only person convicted in the United States for the Sept. 11 attacks _ nor anyone held at Guantanamo had anything to do with the al-Qaida operation.

Personally, I don't think Moussaoui was an important figure. I think he wanted to be part of the plan, and I think he was too incompetent to be useful to qaeda. I think his trial was an exercise in self-aggrandizement.

At the same time, when I heard this putative bin ladin recording, I thought: so what? This is more of a propaganda war than anything else. Bin laden can say what he wants, but he has no credibility. And bin laden likely will say anything he can to make the west look bad.

His communications should be analyzed strictly on the basis of the information they give about him. Any content regarding us is not worth hearing.

That was the true purpose. Watching the USA bend over and lick it's * opening, in the interest of upholding the established legal system.

Most countries in the WORLD would have been done with a "trial" after a quick, painful interrogation. A few weeks, two months tops.

Five years and tens of MILLIONS of dollars. And where are we?
The USA will be buried under it's own system if we don't straighten up!

A radical Tunisian student stridently proclaimed, to me, in the late '80s,
"How long do you think America will last? It's been around for 200 years! That's nothing! It will be over-run ... yada yada yada ..."

Our system is going to over-run us if we keep weakening it with citizenship and social programs for all, over-the-top legal processes for all, appeals and argumentum ad nauseam.

Sure, I'd hate to be caught in the system for an infraction, like mistakenly entering New Jersey with a concealed pistol. But after arresting a presumed hijacker, giving him a World Stage, and then putting him in jail for life ...

Can't some of these guys quietly be returned to their home countries after a quick lumbotomy?

No, I guess not. The process defines us. Defines the USA.

But there still has to be a solution. A solution to make us stronger within the established framework.

Paulie, you must have missed the tongue in cheek allusion to Bin Laden presenting himself to US Marshalls in NYC. Who cares what he says if he'll show up.
