Call me old fashioned, I dont care!
It just really erks me when a gun writer cuts down an old favorite! The 30-30 has been around since 1895! The first big bore I ever shot was a 30-30! This round was a very reliable and accurate round in it's day!! Still is!!! Why some writers compare this to todays hotrod rounds is beyond me?? This round was used by many famous people in the turn of the century! Tom Horn really liked this new long range round and used it to it's full potential on many occasions! My grandfather swore by the 30-30, and put plenty of meat on the table with it! Most people think of the 30-30 as a very limited round! I beg to differ on this. most leverguns where made as carbine's in this round! Not suiteable for Elk! According to the writers! Not so!!! have taken Elk and Deer with a carbine at beyond 200 yards and all one shot clean kills! Once even seen my Grandfather take an Elk out at approx. 500 yards with his 30-30, this one was not a carbine but a full rifle with a 28 inch barrel, a rare one indeed but a great shooter and still in the family!!!
Many familys relied on the old 30-30 to put meat on the table! It always did the job well! Ba-Humbug to those who write it is useless out beyond 100 yards, Do your home work first then get it right!!!

Sorry to sound so one sided here! I have personally owned a few Hotrods in my time, some I liked, some I did not! But to each his own! Hopefully I did not step on any toes here!
Just had to speak my mind!!!

Of course I can play the piano, as long as it has pedals!

Dupont I'm with you buddy..I've hunted deer forever, being 64, I've shot at them with about anything you can imagine, but my old 30-30 winchester has done more for me than my expensive Browning BAR 30-06, or anything else I've used. It is the basic, has always been, and will never be equalled. It gives me confidence, it takes care of me, it never fails me. I took it to Alaska with me in the '60's, it took my first moose, my first bear, my first cariboo. It got my second deer, and many since. The first was with a 12 ga slug, but that just isn't the same.

There are no bad guns, only bad people.

What Saxon said. I own a 94 in .30-30 and it is fun. That said, it is not my first choice for hunting the mountains of the Southwest. With it's modest range (I will give it 150-175 yards, no more), and modest impact it is just a bit underpowered for my tastes. Nothing is more fun though.

Gotta agree with Saxon. Over 5,000,000 of em...they gotta do something right. They are not finicky and within proper limits will do the job most efficiently. As a matter of fact, When Tom Horn was using it...it was the hot rod...at least compared to the blackpowder cartridges then availible.
They make a good saddle gun, I prefer my marlin guide gun in 45-70, but I'll tell you one thing. I'll take that old fashioned 30-30 over a lot of these cowboy action and winchester 92 clones that are chambered out to the pistol cartridges. (.44 mag, .357 mag, 38-44, whatever.) swede

I'm glad to chime in on the .30-30 discussion for many of the reasons already mentioned. The Winchester Model 94 is just one handy rifle. I did get a .356 Big Bore Winchester Model 94AE for a little more punch when moose hunting AND for a bit better scope mounting situation. But I'm a big fan of the Winchester Modle 94. For not-so-rich left-handed folks it is about the only way to go.

    Bonne Chasse!
