Incident with gun largely ignored If it's Sunday, then it must be time for another stream of unconsciousness ... Joshua Johnston inspired today's column. The University of Pittsburgh student said he used a .12-gauge shotgun to defend himself when two masked men broke into his Allentown home, according to police. The alleged intruders, who were charged with burglary, are at Mercy Hospital. Johnston was not charged. The District Attorney's Office could press charges after reviewing the evidence. Our criminal justice system will determine if the accused men, and Johnston for that matter, broke any laws. Pittsburgh police said that Johnston won't be charged. Big Media didn't give this news story much attention; maybe because it's possible a victim used a gun to protect himself. When an unarmed citizen is shot, Big Media says guns are the problem, but when an armed citizen shoots back, it never says guns are the answer. Where are the left-wing gun grabbers, marching and chanting about this "gun violence?" Several studies indicate your gun is more likely to be your friend than your enemy. However, there are precious few news reports confirming that. While I have no reason to believe Johnston would be charged, if the district attorney determines Johnston was justified using his weapon, chances are the story will be buried at the end of a late night newscast - assuming it's aired at all. However if he's charged with using his gun improperly - look for news bulletins about Allentown "gun violence" interrupting your favorite television shows. Stay tuned. The region's renegades, reprobates, riff-raff and ringleaders seem to be coming at you from all sides. Consider the following outbursts justifiable self-defense. Shame on the Gateway School Board for dumbing down its policy so even a struggling student with an 0.8 grade point average may continue participating in extracurricular activities such as sports. Do you get the sense many of your government-run ("public") school systems care more about excellence in the locker room than in the classroom? Since affable television host Bill Flanagan does a fine job staying abreast of the latest news on "The Sunday Business Page," you would've thought someone would've updated the set's background picture featuring Three Rivers Stadium. And the montage at the end of the show featuring the World Trade Center. While it's clear Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey is doing a fine job under very difficult circumstances, I'm confused why Roddey believes the Commonwealth should take some of my money to redistribute it as retraining funds for laid-off airline employees. Memo to Grant Street: If you really wanted to stop the city's graffiti problem, you would've enacted strict laws against it by now. And you would've enforced them. When private property owners complain about the defacement of their buildings, city politicians seldom care, but now that graffiti covers lots of government property, City Council cares a lot.
