Associated Press (Columbus, OH)If you are familiar with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment ofAnimals), then you are aware of the fact they will do almost anythingto protect animals. This year's efforts to save Ohio's deer from the annualstatewide gun season has backfired. For safety's sake, hunters in Ohio are required by law to displayat least 400 square inches of hunter's blaze orange on their personwhen in the woods. Capitalizing on the fact that hunters do not usuallyshootorange, PETA recently bulk purchased blaze orange vests and havebeen affixing them to live-trapped deer in Youngstown suburbs.According to PETA spokesperson Katie Reese, a total of 405 vestswere successfully put into circulation prior to this week, withadditional specimens still being caught and vested. Youngstown entrepreneurGuy Lockey, of Guy's Outdoors, has spit in the face of PETA byoffering rewards for the returned vests this week. Hunters whosuccessfully bag a vested deer receive $5 and a chance for a randomand biggest animal award. As of Tuesday, 308 of the vests had alreadybeen recorded as bagged with most of the hunters registering for Mr.Lockey's drawing."It's so easy, you can see them coming a mile away" said one firstyear hunter after checking in his first spike buck.ODNR officials are worried that the poorly thought out plan byPETA might get somebody shot instead of saving the deer. "Hunters haveturned their plan upside down, we're just hoping that nobody gets hurtand are hoping that none of the vested animals get tangled in brush" saidan unnamed ODNR official. "PETA has really outdone itself thistime."

I think the deer will be easier to spot now. The hunter should take the $5.00 and use it to mail the hide to PETA.

since peta is located in Norfolk Va.where I live I have a good story. In the nearby Great Dismal Swamp management area they have a deer hunt every year, you sign in at five and go to your stand, well the peta guys met at seven, spread out and went into the woods banging pots and blowing whistles, I guess I don't have to say what happened next, it sounded like an artillery barrage, I have never heard so much shooting, I think everyone got at least one deer, and the peta gang got arrested and charged for interfering with hunters lawfully pursuing game and tresspassing on a federal wildlife management area, since it was closed for the hunt, how is that for justice...

That's great!!! LOL! That's as good as sending Sara Brady a brick with her SASE attached when handgun control sent out the postage paid cards to get donations.

Let me get this straight...I can't bait a deer, but PETA can put targets on them?

Oh, this is excellent! LOL! If the spineless, socialist media would report half of what these @#$%^% did, PETA would never get another dime!Tho maybe we should support 'em. "PETA-The Hunter's Best Buddy"...

What a bunch of Hypocrites the PETA people are. They claim hunting is wrong, inhumane etc. They ramble on about how the animals are tramatized just by hunters being in the woods. I would be real interested in knowing just how they managed to put an orange vest on a wild deer without tramatizing it in the process. As my favorite bumper sticker says:I love animals, they're Delicious [This message has been edited by William81 (edited 01-04-2002).]

Judge, where do you get this C.R.A.P.? First, pilots in Vietnam were not provided an automatic homing beacon and second, Russian satellites of the 1960's were not that capable.

As you probably know, I'm not a hunter, but it would seem to me that PETA would know that any decent hunter is not going to shoot at ANYTHING he/she can't positively identify. It seems to me that all they've accomplished is having taking away the deer's natural camoflage and made it a better target.Mudge the logician

Thats great,Imagine that.. Peta lives, I wonder if they could help improve the odds on succesful hunting of pheasant, turkey, and dove hunting in the southwest.Better yet, how about putting these vests on the ferral pigs in Arizona, or New Mex.Someone please get their phone number, next time they are on line.[This message has been edited by turbo (edited 01-03-2002).]

Judge as usual you are full of condensed camel feces. I flew combat in Viet Nam and had an emergency locator radio. It had two selective voice frequencies, one was an emergency locator frequency. The United States, much less the primitive VC did not have the capability to pinpoint emergency signals.

The PETA action well demonstrates the law of unintended consequences. I wish all of our adversaries were so stupid. (On second thought, they are, but they manage to get their agenda enacted and then we have to live with the stupid consequences.)

I strongly suggest that during deer huntingseason that all members of PETA strap antlers to their heads or appendages above the shoulder line and roam the woods in smallherds or singles in areas where it is widely known for large numbers of partially oralmost totally blind hunters. At this point I want to make perfectly clear that I herebydeny any responsibility for any accidents or deaths that occur should these so evidentlybriliant people adopt my well thought out and wonderful plan.
