Dick Tracy did it! What's different now?

From the beginning of the 1900's, Colt made a point of advertising one model gun or another in newspapers and magazines. Most of their advertising was about "Highwaymen" ruining your trip, or "Robbers" spoiling your outing to the mountains. "Dark Nights and Streets" also set the scene to explain why you needed to have a gun for "Protection." Nobody made a big deal of this type of advertising then. In fact, it sold a lot of Colt guns and probably quite a few for some of the other competitors, too! The point here is that it was accepted that a person could protect themselves and everyone seemed to do their best at it. Remember when Dick Tracy appeared in the Sunday Newspapers all around the nation during the middle part of the century? Any of you remember Dick Tracy shooting some bad guy? Remember how the bullet always went through his head and did a "loop the loop" with a big blob of blood, leaving a nice round hold you could look throught? Bet we couldn't stand the noise if a newspaper ran that column today.....what do you think? What's different today? Eighty years ago, you had to protect youself...no cop cars with radios, few phones and the cops certainly didn't have a cell phone. This remained true until the 50's even. You would have to wait until a cop got back into the office for him to go on the next call.......and you might be hoping you didn't have anyone in front of you waiting. Who protected you then if you didn't yourself? What's different today? Had to call a cop lately? They are either too busy with "traffic" or your call is not high enough priority to get immediate attention. If you witness a "drive-by" shooting, you will be asked if they're gone yet. If you say "Yes," your call is now low priority because they're gone and the threat has left too. So, who's protecting you now? It's no different today than it was 50 or 75 years ago. My point here is this! Do we need any more or any less protection today now that the government has taken on the task so loudly? Can you think of a time the government has protected you from any crime? Why are the fine folks out there so determined to force everyone to be "government protected?" I don't see any great success stories to date and doubt any are forthcoming. Once I am "totally protected" does that mean I have to burn my Concealed Carry Permit? Ever try to stop crime by calling about it before it happened? You're told to wait until it does and call back......... Do you believe the "government will, (or even can), protect you?" Why?
