New legislation has been introduced by Senator Feinstein called the "Security and Fair Enforcement in Arms Trafficking Act of 2001", S.1555 http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c107:S.1555: Contact your U.S. Senators http://capwiz.com/gunowners/dbq/officials to make sure they DON'T co-sponsor this bill (contrary to the alert from FCNL)!
The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) needs your help to contact your US Senators. Their support will be essential to pass new legislation introduced by Senator Feinstein (CA) called the "Security and Fair Enforcement in Arms Trafficking Act of 2001" (S 1555). This legislation is designed to help curtail the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons. Please contact your US Senators before Wednesday, November 28, 2001 and ask them to co-sponsor S1555.Small arms and light weapons fuel violent conflicts and human rights abuses worldwide. These weapons result in an estimated 500,000 deaths each year, and the victims are often civilians. The presence of these weapons destabilize communities, hinder the efforts of humanitarian and human rights workers, and inhibit the process of economic development. Furthermore, the size, weight and sheer number of these weapons enable armies to impress children into combat. The new legislation, S 1555, addresses the problem of small arms proliferation by encouraging the U.S. to strengthen legal controls over exports of small arms, and to work internationally to create ways to mark weapons, trace weapons, and perform follow-up monitoring to make sure the weapons are not being used in human rights abuses or for other illegal purposes. S 1555 increases oversight and monitoring of small arms transfers by Congress and the public.Your emails and phone calls are needed now. Please ask your US Senators to cosponsor S 1555, the Security and Fair Enforcement in Arms Trafficking Act of 2001. Remind them that this bill would increase the ability of Congress to stop any U.S. small arms weapon export that has the potential to be used to commit human rights abuses, support terrorism, destabilize democratically elected governments, or undermine international stability. To contact your US Senator, visit the FCNL legislative action center at http://capwiz.com/fconl/home/ or call the US Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Thank you for your prompt assistance with this important initiative. Date Released:November 26, 2001
