Easthampton police chief facing gun charges By Associated Press, 1/11/2002 18:09 EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) The city's police chief was charged Friday with breaking the state's gun safety laws. Chief Robert Redfern, 51, was charged with 27 counts of unlawful storage of a firearm, prosecutors said. The charges stem from a probe that's been underway since July, when two teen-agers were arrested for stealing Redfern's unmarked cruiser from his garage when the chief was on vacation in Hawaii. The teens were invited to the house by Redfern's 13-year-old daughter, prosecutors said. While they were there, they unlocked Redfern's service revolver from a cabinet and handled it, prosecutors said. Police said they found six handguns that didn't have trigger locks in an unlocked dresser drawer in Redfern's bedroom. They also found several rifles without trigger locks in the attic, prosecutors said. Police confiscated 27 firearms and the chief's service revolver. Under state law, firearms must be locked in a cabinet or outfitted with trigger locks when not in use. Redfern, who has been on paid leave since August, refused to comment when contacted by The Associated Press Friday. http://www.boston.com/dailynews/011/region/Easthampton_police_chief_facin:.shtml

How aweful...for the police chief. However, I am sure that he (like many police chiefs) has already played into the hands of the politicians in power and probably supported these laws with his own winks and nods. If this happened to Minneapolis or St. Paul's police chiefs I would be rolling on the floor laughing. Poetic justice in my opinion. However, I don't know the politics of this one in general so I will not pass judgement unless I learn more about his past.

Redferns' good judgement shows in leaving a 13 year old girl alone while he goes off to Hawaii.

Oh I am sure the case will be throw out-being he is a policeman and all. The state of Massachussettes would not want to upset their army of oppression.I can just hear the police association, not talking about the absurdity of the trigger lock law, but how they, as police should be exempt from it.
