NRA's "good friend of the Second Amendment" Calls for .50 Caliber Rifle Ban in Los Angeles

Says, "There is no reason for anyone to own a .50 cal weapon."

KeepAndBearArms.com -- Once again, the National Rifle Association's leaders have demonstrated exceedingly poor judgment in picking and promoting "friends." This time, their "good friend" is a Los Angeles city councilman who adamantly supports the outright ban of a firearm that has only ever been used in one documented crime in the entire nation.

NRA's partner in crime is Dennis Zine, a former LAPD cop and now the Los Angeles city councilman for District 3. His contact information and evidence of the above assertions are each found below.

NRA'S SUPPORT OF DENNIS "GUN BANNER" ZINE

Prior to the NRA Members' Council meeting on September 12 of this year -- yes, a meeting that happened just two weeks ago -- NRA sent out a postcard inviting people to come and meet "Dennis Zine, one of LA's newest council members." In their postcard -- click here to read a scanned copy of it for yourself, please, or click on the thumbnail image to the left of this paragraph -- NRA described Mr. Zine as "a good friend of the Second Amendment."

"He will bring us up to date on proposed firearms regulations," says the postcard -- the ink barely dry even now.

Two weeks later...

LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL MOVES TO BAN THE .50 CALIBER RIFLE

According to John Burtt, Chairman of the Fifty Caliber Shooters Policy Institute,

"For those of you who have not heard, on Tuesday Sept 24th the Los Angeles City Council passed a motion (unanimously) directing the city attorney to draft a city ordinance to ban the .50 BMG rifle and the ammunition for it, within the city limits of Los Angeles. The city atty. will now create a draft of the ordinance and will send it back to the Public Safety Committee for hearings probably within 3-4 weeks."

That message was forwarded to me by Matt Huston, Vice President of the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association, of which I am a dues-paying member even though I've never once fired a .50BMG rifle. Matt and John both live in California. Says Mr. Burtt's message, "We have a lot of dedicated .50 cal owners in the Los Angeles area who are going to be directly affected by this legislation. We need to support them and help in any way we can."

Burtt's email alert reported that he believes this gun ban was already a done deal in the minds of those who've been aggressively making it happen:

"The council member who sponsored the bill (Mark Ridley-Thomas) had two officers from LAPD bring in a Barrett model M82A-1 .50 BMG and set it up on the table for show purposes. Never mind the fact that particular gun was banned under the Assault Weapons Bill, but they used it in their one-way dog & pony show to once again employ their "bogey man" politics style to accomplish the task of taking guns from law abiding gun owners."

Can any public servant who'd participate in that kind of anti-gun circus be "a good friend of the Second Amendment"?

COUNCILMAN ZINE'S STRONG SUPPORT OF A GUN BAN

Once we got wind of the fact that the Los Angeles city council had allegedly unanimously voted to draft a proposal to ban the .50, David Codrea -- who lives in Los Angeles -- recalled having seen the above-mentioned NRA Members' Council postcard touting councilman Zine as "a good friend of the Second Amendment." Mr. Codrea contacted Mr. Zine via email:

From: "David Codrea"
To:
Subject: LA's .50 Cal Ban
Date sent: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 08:08:56 -0700

Mr. Zine, I am trying to track down how you voted on the ban.

The Violence Policy Center claims the Council vote was unanimous, yet the documents I have seen indicate only 7 members signed on, which isn't even a majority.

The NRA, which hosted you earlier this month, claimed on their meeting notice of your appearance, that you are "a good friend of the Second Amendment."

Did you vote on this issue, and if so, how did you vote?

David Codrea

Given the fact that the NRA had sponsored Mr. Zine to a Members' Council meeting just two weeks earlier, we were having a hard time believing he'd give us written verification that he supported this gun ban. (We'd seen VPC's press release saying the vote was unanimous, but they lie for a living, so we needed proof from a credible source.) After all, not only have there been zero crimes in Los Angeles with the .50BMG rifle, there has only been one single documented crime with the .50BMG in the entire nation, and that crime was committed by a police officer who lost his marbles! And surely NRA wouldn't call a GUN BANNER "a good friend of the Second Amendment," right?

Wrong! Mr. Zine not only came back to us as a gun prohibitionist, he came back with his chest sticking out and with the same mealy mouthed nonsense you'd expect to hear from longtime radical gun prohibitionists like the liars at "Violence Policy Center":

From: Council Member Zine

Subject: Re: LA's .50 Cal Ban

Mr. Codrea:

I am a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. I am also a person with 33 years of LAPD street experience. I was at the North Hollywood shootout and know how violence impacts our city. I believe that reason and common sense also have a place with the 2nd amendment.

There is no reason for anyone to own a .50 cal weapon. I voted to support the ban.......The N.R.A. needs to be more understanding to the needs of our community.....

Councilman Dennis P. Zine

Then there's the matter of NRA's "good friend of the Second Amendment." How you choose to deal with that is up to you as a gun-owning American citizen and a patriotically inclined supporter of gun rights organizations. While I certainly appreciate some of what NRA does, I stopped giving them money a long time ago. There are lots of reasons why I haven't been able to bring myself to write them a check.

I haven't been keeping up with what Gun Owners of America has been doing to save California lately, but I'm quite certain they wouldn't be calling this gun-banning city councilman "a good friend of the Second Amendment." And I do know that GOA has promoted and supported our Petition for the Enforcement of the Second Amendment -- spearheaded by David Codrea as a KeepAndBearArms.com/Citizens of America joint venture and based on evidence collected in California -- while at least one of NRA's leaders in the state has publicly bashed the project.

    WOW!!! With friends like these.......
And the mantra of the NRA sheeple; "...well I dont always agree with the NRA, I think they are the best voice we have, and will continue to support them..."

"Sometimes the people have to give up some individual rights for the safety of society."
