Music: What's missing...

spinyspiny Member Posts: 3,117
edited August 2003 in General Discussion
An intro thats sets the tone and standard for the song that follows.
In the midst of my un-packing and scrubbing floors, Papa Was a Rolling Stone or The Third of September came on. I had to sit and take it in. Just like I had to do the same with the thunderstorm that hit about 2 hours ago.
Just really love a lot of Lou Rawls music. Grandmas' Hands comes to mind.

So, do do find anything missing in todays music? What is it?
BTW: I also like Rammenstein.

What I find missing in most of todays music is....music. Talent and a decent tune are hard to come by in today's new bands.

The girl singers all sing about being sluts and the guys all whine like babies that life ain't fair. Oh and it is ok to use more than three chords in a song. Someone should tell them that.

Sepultura hasn't done anything decent since "Roots" in the mid-90's.

If you turn on the radio or listen to music your kids play, there are threads of what is your personal favorite music out there today.
I always loved a great intro or lead in, with a heavy beat to it. I have never liked the forever ending (think Crosby, Stills and Nash?) Music with vocal soul has my vote. Don't really care about the style, just the soul reaching it evokes.
Are people locked in to the words today, not the sound? The words mean something to me, but they come last, if at all.
Must be that I really am ok, but just with the under 40 set!

DWS: I suspect that you are correct. However, there was a nice stand of music before then.[:)] I enjoy some of it. Generaly because of the sound and secondly because of the supposed 'statement'.

I thought a sepultura was a proctologist's instrument? Or maybe it was gynocologists? Oh, I remember it was a splunking tool. I knew it had to do with exploring dark, forbidding places.

I like a few songs here and there. Averil has a few. No more great albums though.Must have listened to The White Album a thousand times.Same with Eat A Peach.

Just gave a bud a couple of vcr's that I bought of the original bands (most of the origninal, anyway) to copy fo himself.

They are doo * and blues groups (singers, not musicians) from the late 50's and the 60's.

They were recorded in Pittsburg in 1991 by the original artists accompanied by a terrific bands and an orchestra.

With the bass line and the fill ins, Man, this is good stuff.

Can't listen to too much that is out there today. I used to always have a radio on, listened to mostly country music for the last couple of years until the only country station up here, Y107, went south.

Now I usually only listen to rush, hannity and such. I like them, but I miss the country music. The new music sucks.

Now I know how my parents felt when I was younger.[:0]

I don't listen to the radio, I hate commercials. Don't watch MTV since they took off Headbangers Ball, al I listen to is the jukebox I have in my computer and homemade CDs that have exactly what I want on them. Now when my two kids start cranking up new music I act like a spoiled kid myself and blow them out of the house with some good old fashoined 70's and 80's rock and roll. [;)]My stereo in 10 times bigger then theirs and I am not afriad to TURN UP THE RADIO(Autograph)[}:)]

salzo: I have tuned out the birds many a day with Strauss Waltzes, because I had to work nights.
Strauss rules over the Waltz. The Waltz has a very old origin in my soul. Right next to 'There Was Blood On the Saddle' (or that is the line I remember)

Spiny, you asked a good question, quote:What about that song is missing in todays music?, you know I honestly cannot answer that. I do have some newer music but mostly mine is all 70/80s but I cannot find what is missing, it just is. Some music just hits the spot and other music is just music. Closest I can come to the Nazareth and Floyd style is STP and some Nirvana.

Spiny glad to see ya back! Just my own observation, seems to me like the more advanced electronics and computers became the less talent a singer would need to make a record. I would be very interesting to see how many of todays young artists can actually carry a tune without the help of electronics, synthesizers etc.

Lonnie: Finally bought myself the stereo from hell two years ago. Blew up the first receiver (Harmon Kardon) in a month. Trying to shut up the neighbors dog at 2:00 am when I had to get up for work at 5:00 am. Used the youngest daughters music to do it. Enjoyed the music more than the idea of strangling the dog next door.
Got a new receiver. No longer fighting with the dog next door. These Missions are great, powered by the HK.
Someday, you will be stuck in a traffic jam with a kid and have 3 hours to really listen to their music and they to yours. It can bring you from Strauss to Rammenstein (?), with a smile on your face![:D]

In the Shawshank Redemption, what was the operatic duet that the banker played from the office over the loud speakers. I'd love to have a copy of that.

Spiny, you would laugh but my stereo in here is an old Fisher component system with 4 big 15" speakers that stand 4' tall and a Pyle amp. All this in a small room with a 4 speakers surrounding me, beleive me I like my music loud!

Franc, Ozzy may be losing it but dangit he tries!!
How many other bands or singers can do the style of performance that man can do in his mid 50's? Gotta love him[:D]

You have to give me more of a hint as to what you would be willing to try.

I listen to almost any Ozzy, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth (very political and heavy with a lot of good intro build ups then the music just explodes in your face!) Iron Maiden is a heavy form of Nazareth style of music, they tell stories mostly medival stories and have some absolute awsome music, infact what you need to do is go buy the Rock In Rio video by Iron Maiden, make sure your stereo is hooked up to your TV and watch that sucker at high volume, it is almost mezmerizing. There is no way to totally desrcribe Iron Maidens live music other than WOW. To some it is noise but if you can get lost in Nazareth, Floyd or Doors Iron Maiden will lose you as well only just a little bit harder!

I think what's missing is exposure. Radio used to be a little dangerous, independant and took some chances but now it is a huge corporate monolith like Clear Channel that is too structured and wants to remain safe for ratings and advertsiers.

The really "good" music it sounds like many of you would like is out there but how would you ever know?

    What about these artists:
Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien (or any of his)
Keb Mo - The Door (or any his)
    Shinedown - Leave a Whisper
And if you can find it, Steve Jones - Fire and Gasoline

    Them ducks is wary.

As a member of today's youth, I feel music is missing originality. Now, I love all types of music. I love the older stuff as well as the new stuff. But one thing I find in "old" music that I don't find in the newer stuff is originality. I mean, how many Christinas and Britneys can a person see in their lifetime? I will admit that a lot of music sounds similar and is about the same thing... I hope it only gets better, but fear that it will get worse.

    Arielle

I love myself and so should you!
