On March 14, 1950, the FBI initiated its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives Program in order to draw attention to dangerous criminals who have avoided capture. To date, an amazing 143 of these "most wanted fugitives" have been apprehended due to public assistance.
The goal of this column is to increase that "capture" number by at least one -- with your help!
Right now there are eight wanted fugitives on the FBI's list instead of the usual ten. Why? Because one of the fugitives captured (Christian Michael Longo was a suspect in the murder of his wife and their three young children) and the other fugitive is deceased (Ramon Eduardo Arellano-Felix was a suspect in a conspiracy to import cocaine and marijuana).
Here is a brief review of the eight remaining suspects currently on the FBI's Most Wanted List:
Michael Scott Bliss -- a convicted felon, is wanted for the alleged molestation of a young * numerous occasions beginning in September of 2000. Many of these molestations, which occurred in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, were videotaped. Considered armed and extremely dangerous. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading directly to Bliss' arrest.
Hopeton Eric Brown -- is being sought in the United States for his alleged involvement in drug-related activities, as well as for the murder of a man, and the attempted murder of a woman in March of 1997 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is also wanted by authorities in Jamaica for allegedly committing two murders in Montego Bay in January of 2001. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading directly to Brown's arrest.
James J. Bulger -- is being sought for his alleged role in numerous murders committed from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s in connection with his leadership of an organized crime group that allegedly controlled extortion, drug deals and other illegal activities in the Boston, Massachusetts area. He has a violent temper and is known to carry a knife at all times. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. The FBI is offering a $1,000,000 reward for information leading directly to Bulger's arrest.
Victor Manuel Gerena -- is being sought in connection with the armed robbery of approximately $7 million from a security company in Connecticut. He allegedly took two security employees hostage at gunpoint and then handcuffed, bound and injected them with an unknown substance in order to further disable them. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading directly to Gerena's arrest.
Glen Stewart Godwin -- is being sought for his 1987 escape from Folsom State Prison in California, where he was serving a lengthy sentence for murder. Later in 1987, Godwin was arrested for drug trafficking in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. After being convicted, he was sent to a prison in Guadalajara. In April of 1991, Godwin allegedly murdered a fellow inmate and then escaped five months later. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous and an escape risk. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading directly to Godwin's arrest.
Eric Robert Rudolph -- is charged in connection with the bombing of a health clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, in which a police officer was killed and a nurse critically wounded. He is also charged in connection with the fatal bombings at Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, the double bombings at the Sandy Springs Professional Office Building north of Atlanta, and the double bombings at the Otherside Lounge in midtown Atlanta. These bomb blasts injured more than 150 people. Rudolph is known to own firearms and to have targeted law enforcement. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. The FBI is offering a $1,000,000 reward for information leading directly to Rudolph's arrest.
Donald Eugene Webb -- is being sought in connection with the murder of a police chief in Pennsylvania who was shot twice at close range after being brutally beaten about the head and face with a blunt instrument. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous and an escape risk. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading directly to Webb's arrest.
The last, but definitely not the least fugitive...
Osama bin Laden -- is wanted in connection with the August 7, 1998, bombings of the United States embassies in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya. These attacks killed over 200 people. In addition, bin Laden is a suspect in other terrorist attacks throughout the world. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. The Rewards For Justice Program, United States Department of State, is offering a reward of up to $25 million for information leading directly to the apprehension or conviction of Osama bin Laden. An additional $2 million is being offered through a program developed and funded by the Airline Pilots Association and the Air Transport Association.
Do not try to apprehend any of these wanted fugitives yourself.
If you have any information concerning the above persons, please immediately contact your local FBI Office or the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Be sure to check the FBI's website (www.fbi.gov) for photos and complete details on these wanted suspects.
A final thought -- the FBI values and recognizes the need for public assistance in tracking fugitives. It is my sincere hope that the readers of "Staying Safe" will help to locate at least one of these FBI wanted "bad guys."
Will you help?
