Gun-control groups fire back for Ed
Counter NRA anti-Rendell ads

Two gun-control organizations are running radio ads defending Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed Rendell from National Rifle Association attacks, while another pro-gun group has opened up with ads attacking him.
Those are among the developments as candidates Rendell and Bob Casey Jr. join friends, allies and surrogates in the final, frantic days of campaigning before Tuesday's primary election.
"It's not about persuasion now," said Rendell campaign spokesman Dan Fee, "It's about turning out the vote."
Rendell's schedule for yesterday included six events, beginning with a handshaking stop at the Bridge and Pratt transit stop and ending with a bowling alley visit.
In between were events in Philadelphia, Easton and Norristown, as Rendell hopes to energize his base in the city and the suburbs.
Casey, whose strength is elsewhere in the state, isn't expected here again. His day began greeting workers at a Wilkes-Barre factory gate and ended at a union hall in Pittsburgh.
The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and CeaseFire Pennsylvania announced a radio ad campaign to counter what the group called "the NRA's misleading charges against Ed Rendell."
The ad, which praises Rendell for supporting "common-sense gun laws," is a response to the NRA's hard-hitting radio ad describing Rendell as a "is a big-city politician who believes your guns, not criminals, are the problem."
Director Josh Horwitz said the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence will buy about $20,000 worth of radio time on station B-101 "to set the record straight and show we won't be pushed around by the lies of the National Rifle Association."
Meanwhile a western Pennsylvania-based group, Firearms Owners Against Crime says it is now airing radio ads in the east and west urging gun owners to vote for Casey.
Also, the National Abortion Rights Action League has about 25 out-of-town volunteers here joining local supporters to distribute literature, work street corners and run phone banks on Rendell's behalf.
The Urban Family Council, a socially conservative religious group, will be distributing leaflets at churches tomorrow in support of Casey.
Recent polls show Rendell leading, but Casey says he believes the race is very close and could depend on which side has the best field organization to get voters to the polls.
Rendell has weekend events planned in Philadelphia, Chester, Media, Springfield and King of Prussia. Mayor Street will join him working crowds and may speak at a church for him tomorrow.
Casey will spend today at several small cities and towns in southwestern Pennsylvania, and tomorrow in the Pittsburgh area.
