Well monday morning im headed out to try too call in a cayote... Im really looking forward too the challenge. this will be my first cayote hunt. I hear that they are extremely intellegent. my brother in law has had quite a bit of experience in this field of hunting, so he will be joining me. I think we will be using a rabbit call. hopefully this will prove succsessful.

Coyotes arent extremely intelligent they are extremely cautious and they remember. They wont fall for the same trick twice. So dont miss.Alot of times you have to take coyotes with range shots unless you are really good stalker.Make sure their dead before you get too close a wounded one can put one hell of a bite on you.Better than using a rabbit call is shoot a rabbit and leave him on the point where you will be tucked in and waiting this will bring em in the perfect range quicker.Good luck and have fun.

I see coyotes nearly every day. I don't shoot them on my place now that their numbers are down to size--they don't bother the cattle and they keep the rabbits and rats in check. Even had one come up the other night and eat our of the dog's bowl on the back porch.

The dogs that town people dump out here are the real pain. They pack up and get into all sorts of mischief, including chasing cattle. That causes me to have to do what the town people should have done.

The only bad thing about hunting coyotes this time of year, The pups are not weined yet. The alpha female does not hunt. The rest of the pack brings her food. If you can wait till September, You will get run over by teenage coyotes. In September any caller can look like a champ. They are kicked out of the pack then, And are forming there on packs. Talk about some suckers.

Several years ago I had some neighbors that would run coyotes with trail hounds. They didn't use kill dogs, just hounds. They would walk the dogs into the middle of a section and try to start a coyote, then follow around with pickups and c.b. radios and just watch the chase. They would get a little upset if some one would shoot their coyotes. It would slow down their chasing. Those guys would even try to find the dens in the spring and dock the pups tail's. They said if a coyotes tail gets full of mud they can't run as well. You could watch a coyote make a big circle on a pasture then cut his own trail and you would think the dogs would catch the closes't trail but they generally would follow the big circle.

Once I was bailing some straw and my old shepherd dog jumped a female coyote and ran her for a couple of hundred yards and started back. The coyote just followed him back to where he had jumped her up and nipped the dog on the butt and ran off again. They did this about three times until the dog just wouldn't chase her anymore. I think she had pups there close.

Another time I had a litter under the over flow pipe on one of my ponds. That is a hoot to watch those pups from above looking down from the top of the pond dam.

I first started hunting coyotes with a 22-250 it would put holes in them big enough to stick your fist in.And a friend ask me to give him the carcass I scaled back to a .223 not much difference. So I tried the 22 Hornet and it was the perfect medicine.

    Best!!

rugster...definitely agree with 22 Hornet for coyotes. Coyote hunting is a great sport using a Browning Low-Wall, single shot, 22 Hornet. I usually give leave my kill with someone on the reservation on my way out. They always appreciate and it, and guarantees my welcome back.

Never coyote hunted before moving to Arizona, but coyote and prairie dog hunting is becoming one of my favorite past times.

Hey coonass, are you in the district that got hammered by Hurricane Andrew? My buddy and I were down there doing relief work for that storm. And we found plenty of people who needed some help.

I understand it's a no-no to post links to other gun sites here, but this one's not just another gun site. It's oriented to the specific type of hunting you're in for.

You'll probably find info here that'll answer questions you didn't know to ask:

I am not a coyote hunter, but I did shoot one this spring-and it seems to me a turkey call makes a great coyote call.
I was spring gobbler hunting, and I let out a few yelps with my call. 2 minutes later, I had a coyote walking up the trail I was sitting on. I gave a short yelp, and the coyote looked at me, and started moving in on me! I started waving my arms, and it stopped for a second, then started coming in again. Again I waved my arms and my gun, she stopped, looked confused and came in again. I swear I thought the yote was going to come right in on me. When it got ten yards away, I shot her with #5 turkey loads-dropped like a sack of potatoes.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to preserve a pelt, so I left it for the vultures. I was told by the land owner that the coyotes and bobcats were reaking havoc on the turkeys, and they wanted me to shoot any bobcats or coyotes that I saw.

    jastr,
Give me a holler on my new e-mail below and let's go hunt something around about the first of September. I will have some extra dough then and just feel the need to hunt.
