US Marines may be charged in Iraq civilian deaths

    By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Marines could face criminal charges, including murder, over the deaths of up to two dozen Iraqi civilians last year, a defence official said on Friday.

The case could prove a further setback for U.S. President George W. Bush who described the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal as America's "biggest mistake" and admitted saying "bring 'em on" to insurgents in 2003 may have "sent the wrong message".

Military and political progress to quell the insurgency has been hard to come by. Iran, blamed by the United States for backing insurgents in Iraq, on Friday ruled out talks with U.S. officials over Iraq because of Washington's "negative" attitude.

The U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which handles criminal inquiries involving Marines, is investigating a November 19 incident in Haditha, about 140 miles (220 km) northwest of Baghdad. The military has said 15 civilians were killed, while a senior Republican lawmaker last week put the number at about 24.

The probe has not been completed and no final decisions on charges have been made, said the defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

I don't find it insulting. It's a reflection of things to come unless we stop the invasion. I live in the Third World Republic of Miami, so I guess you can say I reside in occupied land. Wake up America, because little by little the immigrants are taking over. If a cartoon like this helps to enlighten people on this issue then I'm all for it.

BTW, on the Iraqi deaths, the Marines involed in this incident had just been attacked by an IED that blew up a Humvee. Dazed and confused by the concussion(sp) of the blast, they fired in the direction of what they thought was hostile fire. They then proceeded to search a few homes for those who set off the explosive device. Some Iraqis were killed. This is an unfortunate fog of war incident. The brave young Marines do not deserve to get charged. This was no Lt. Calley incident like in Nam. The press is crucifying them.

Looks to ME like the Pentagon is going to fry them.

Just too bad those finding fault here could just get their * into those streets a bit...perhaps having a few of their buddies blown to hell would change their minds.

    dolfan,

But I thought the investigation started prior to the press getting a hold of this story?

I'm not saying they're guilty, but this is the problem one faces when men trained for war are given a policeman's duty. I'm not trying to denigrate Marines or police because they both have hard jobs - but their jobs are different.

Our military is sworn to uphold the constitution of the United States, their basic role is to protect the 50 states from invasion.

So why are they in Iraq?

    Red;
I agree with you. But corruption sent them over there...and by God they ought to stand behind them.
As pointed out by another poster..Military men JOBS is to kill people and break things...not police areas.

The other part of the oath that deals with following orders of the President. If we were to call it unlawful and refuse to go you know what would happen.

Yeah folks, the picture is a sign of things to come. Our elected officials are not listening to the people who elected them.
