Got a 1996 S-10 With the 4.3 X V-6 and 4L60-E (700R4) Transmission. At 50 MPH and beyond if I come off the pedal slightly but not all the way as to slightly decelerate, the damn thing feels like the torque converter is locking and unlocking. Anyone else have this problem and what do I need to fix it?

Man I wish you hadn't said 700r4!!! Mine cost me $1200 for a F@#*ing rebuild. JUNK JUNK JUNK. They are the same ones that were used behind the v8's so it's not an overpower problem, but I will be willing to bet it's drive and overdrive clutch is burning up. Try driving it in 1 and 2 or low and 3rd or whatever the first two gears are. Do the same thing, (let off the gas slightly) if the problem doesn't exist it's the higher gear clutches.

Or,......does it feel like it's trying to shift in and out of drive/overdrive? That is a sensor on the torque converter which controls the in-out shift relative to pressure and speed. When I put the 35" tires on my old suburban, she would shift in and out of overdrive because the tires changed the gear ratio and therefore pressure on the converter at highway speeds. Once I disconnected it, so it wouldn't go into overdrive, it didn't shift every thrity seconds and give that surge feeling.

One thing that GM found out from the transmission shops is that for in town, light-to-light driving where the trans was unable to shift into overdrive and stay there, it would shift in and out trying to get better gas mileage, and therefore created extra heat and wear on the high gear clutches and burned them quickly. They now tell you that with older 700's, to leave them in D not in the OD setting while in town and then bump it up to OD once on the highway.

Take her for a ride and let me know how she acts in the lower gears.

Granaded (exploded) itself, or so far that seems to be the case. Its 90 Gmc Z71 /W 700r4. but after 116 thous. somethings got to give, but I am hard on mine to. My friend at the dealer ship said its not uncomon.

    Good luck!

Had the same problem at 85000 miles, except it was 4L60E GM trans in a 94 K5 Blazer. Afetr I priced the rebuilds, which are usually not that great, I went to the local Chev dealer, and ordered a tranny from them in the crate, 50000 miles or 36 months warranty. Installed was $1900.00 (2 years ago). I know it sounds like a lot, but if you plan on keeping the vehicle, it might be worth looking into.

...we go through 2 or 3 transmissions a year at work, and now just buy them in the crate, no more rebuilds here...

Get a shop to plug a snap-on scan tool to your truck and road test it. The scanner will tell you if a sensor is going bad or maybe it's something simple not requiring a rebuild. If you keep driving it it may damage something though. The 4L60 is plenty hefty enough for the 4.3, and if the mileage isn't excessive your clutches are fine. Maybe your Throttle Body Injection's Throttle Position Sensor needs adjustment or your rear speed sensor may be going bad. With these new tranny's it's usually the darn electronics fouling first. A transmission shop WILL charge you for a rebuild even if it doesn't need it, go to a dealership for diagnosis.

nitrouz is 100% correct with his assessment. It probably is the OD clutch pack, but could also be several sensors within and without the tranny. Ideally there will be a code in the CPU that the dealer can read to determine which, if any, sensors are malfunctioning.

I disagree with nitrouz on only one point: DON'T go to a dealer unless 1)The vehicle is still covered by a warranty...2)You don't know ANY honest mechanics to take it to. I personally have found dealer service departments to be every bit as dishonest as the stereotypical 'independant mechanic', in some cases more so.

Well, I got under there to look for obviuos stuff and lo and behold.......the neutral safety switch is crispy, the damn thing drives in neutral and not one leak to be found. Played with the wires and the thing stopped driving in "n". Things are getting weird!
