I got a Ruger 454 on the way

I am expecting a Ruger in 454 Casull, with 9.5" bbl. to be arriving soon. I've been reading on CorBon's site about the new 45 Long Colt Mag +P round they have at 1300+ fps., and am contemplating just selling my 44mag, since the 45 can be shot through the Casull, and is real close in performance to the 44mag. I reload and was wondering if any of you have tryed to duplicate the 45 load I mentioned, and if anyone has shot it, and how it did. Also, what do you think, should I just hold onto it or sell the 44? I cant really make up my mind. I didnt put this in the Ask the Experts forum, cause I didnt feel it really belonged there, if it does let me know and I'll move it.

I'd say that if it's not gonna hurt you cash wise, keep it. I was looking in the experts forum a little while ago about a Fox double, and thinking about the one I sold about 40 years ago. Wish I still had it.(damn, be a good thread). The ones that got away.

I know what you mean, I sold it once, and got it back due to blind luck, it was nice to see an old friend. I dont need the money.

All i can say about selling a gun is ;I bought my first .44 Mag. for $90.00 in 1975, sold it in 1980 for $175.00 and bought it back in 1985 for $200.00. I can't afford to sell it again.

When did they start making it in 9.5? I have one in 7.5 and love it, invest in good glass, I have the Leupold M8-4X extended eye relief scopes on both of my super redhawks.I have taken deer with both the 44 mag and the .454 casull. Just don't plan on long days at the range with it that could hurt you in your pocket book as well as your hands, good luck and have fun...

You know what, I noticed that today, when I was looking through my Ruger catalog, that it only lists the 7.5" bbl. I do not know when they started making it, and my catalog does not have a date on it anywhere, but I know its not more than 2 yrs. old. Some where between the end of 99 and now? Good catch. Thanks for the warning. I'm looking forward to the experience, though.I was using a glove with my .44 originally, but I dont need it anymore, we will see about the 454. If it kicks too much, its getting mag-na-ported, for sure. I have a Leupold 4x on my .44, and I dont think I care for a scope on it. It caused me a problem this year. I had a difficult shot on a deer this year, that should have been easy, but it was off my left shoulder, and you know I couldnt get the scope far enough away from my eye to see clearly, made the shot barely, but it should have been an easier shot, need another 4x?sig-man, have you tryed the load I mentioned in my original post?

Buddys house outside the gate, or down at the muzzle loaders club.

Hey Robs! Being the ruger fanatic that I am..I opted for the Raging Bull .454. LOUD AND CLEAR> NOT KNOCKING ANY BRAND!!! MY COMPUTER CANT STAND THE HEAT FROM FLAMES! COMPLETE MELTDOWN ONCE! I have owned an FA, sold it,...and I dont sell, once I buy..just open up the 2 gun safes and youll see! I went and put a couple bxs through the Ruger and the Bull, and after much soul searching and anguished thought...bought the Bull. With extra under barrel weight there is less muzzle flip than w/the FA, but that aint really saying much! Anyway have read and heard from people who should know that feeding your .454 with .45lc's that the cylynder walls get somewhat pitted and goobered up since the case on the .45lc's is just a bit shorter than the .454 case....making insertion and extraction of the .454 cases hard. Now to me that actually seems like a little stretch unless you plan on putting a lot of super hot handloads in .45lc through the gun (&why?potent enough as is)or, you intend on shooting a bazillion dollars worth of off the shelf .454's through it. Nothing i have read/heard on this subject said "how many" .45lc's it took to start the pitting, thus creating the prob. I plan on buying another cylynder in .45lc. for mine just to be on the safe side. I'm a nut when it come to having a rifle that eats the same rounds as one of my handguns,....so when I heard this the first time(after I bought 2 bxs of .45lc) to feed the .454.....I went out and bought a new Marlin in .45lc!!Hey, couldnt let 2 bxs of shells just sit around and go to waste could I? "any excuse....." Check the so called prob. of cylynder pitting out for yourself and decide if you need an extra cylynder. Somebody around here knows I'm sure.
"ANY" EXCUSE IS A GOOD REASON TO BUY "JUST 1 MORE".& VICIE-VERSIE!

Rugernut3,Hey bud, I'd heard of .44s and 357s having that problem, of extraction, and had thought about the 454 maybe doing that, but I hadnt heard about the pitting part, that bothers me. I always figured if people had extraction problems it was cause they wernt cleaning the cylinders well enough, but now I'm wondering. As to the muzzle flip, I'll have to see for myself, although I believe what you're saying, just want to see. I already figured on getting it mag-na-ported if it really bothers me. I'm just not ready for the looks of the Raging Bull, it just doesnt settle right with me, although I do like the color case hardening job on some of them. As for this extra cylinder, I didnt know that you could get one. EDUCATE me, more on this, do I just order one from Ruger, doesnt it have to be fitted in, or are their production tolerances THAT close? I went to their web site and didnt see anything available for it. Thank you, Rob.

Hi I did the same thing your thinking of doing. I sold my 44 got a 454 for a AK tent gun and when I tried to carry the 454 found it to be to big to strap on and ride a quad. so I went and bought another 44 to carry. My advice for what it's worth is keep the 44 if you don't need the money.

The Taurus is terrible about that extraction problem. My Ruger never did it.
