Bass Fisherman Help Needed!

Ok, I know this is a hunting forum, but....I have only fished with spinning reels. Just got a bait caster. Loaded it with 12# test & put a plastic plug & cast it out on the driveway.Plug went out 35 feet & slammed to the ground. Like it hit a wall in the air. I stripped line of the reel.... no problem. When I started to wind the reel, the reel tripped & it could wind the line back in. no problem. This scenario repeated itself many times. I even stripped off 60 yards of line, cut it off, retied the plug & tried again. Same results. What have I done wrong?

What do you mean"the reel tripped & it could wind the line back in"?I think either your drag, resistance cap or magnet is too tight. What kind of reel?cpermd

You need to adjust your reel according to the weight of the lure.To do this, Hold the pole up and press the release on the reel. If the lure does not fall freely, you need to adjust the reel. All of these type of reels are different and some are tricky to adjust.... consult your owners manual....Good luck[This message has been edited by William81 (edited 12-20-2001).]

This why I fish with a cane pole or a Zebco 33. If it doesn't work right, I take it back and get another. If it works right for a year or three and then tears up, I go buy another one. Wigglers for bream and black plastic worms for bass.Of course, I don't fish well.

You cast differently then you do with the other one. After you adjust as stated above, cast withe your wrist and the reel sideways, with the handle point up, just before it hits the water, stop the spool with your thunb. After you get the hang of and cast without "bird nesting" your spool, then go to the regular casting method.\All I fish with is baitcasters and I catch a lot of fish. Ya, just adjust your weight and it should work fine.........well after about a week or cursing and the like. It tells you how to do it in the manual. I like mine with a little more give than they call for but once you adjust it right and get used to it you will like it. I only use a bait caster for stryper. Open face for everything else. I am not all that crazy about bait casters. The open face that will haul in a big mamma are usually cheaply made so that is the only reason I don't use them on stryper.

hey east bay...you have several adj. on a good bait casting reel. been bass fishing for over 30 yrs. not bragging at all...but i learned long time ago if you are real serious about getting a good double digit fish on the wall ( i went to fiberglass replicas years ago, save the big sow bass for others to enjoy, catch and release)buy only THE BEST equip. I use three rods, three reels with spares. It aint cheap. reels I use average $175 a pop/rods $about the same. Way i figure it from experiance that BIG bass are real few and far between, even fishin down mexico way.So why in the world spend a p*ss ant amount on your equipment to have it torn up by that "once in a lifetime bass"? Trust me, i have fished many a tournament, and have a bazillion hours and $$$ invested in bass fishing along with other people i know and i have been very fortuanate to have caught some huge bass: several over 10, biggest 13.7. Others i fish with only have maybe a 7 or 8lber to their name, it aint easy! your ? now that i have babbled...A good reel will have a spool tension adj. on the side (knurled knob). Place a bait on the end of your line ( I only use (SPYDER WIRE), NO MEMORY, SUPER SMALL DIAMETER FOR THE TEST, AND YOU CAN TOW A TRUCK WITH IT! With said bait on the end of the line push in on the spool release bar which on a good reel will be at the the back of the reel just above where your thumb should be resting, HOLD IT DOWN! Now release it slowly with your some tip just touching the line on the spool to keep the line from whizzing off causing a "prolash"! A 3/8 bait is fine to test with. With bait on, rod tip up release the thum bar as stated while slowley loosing the spoll tension knob on the side (be sure this knob is totally snug before you start) the bait should fall at a nice even slow decent. Now each time you change to a different weight bait you need to readjust this tension, super easy and fast after you get used to it. A good reel should also have some magnetic anti-backlash adjustments on it also, you will have to play with these a little till you can get a nice smooth long accurate cast. practice. If your bait is going out like you said and stops all of a sudden like it hits an invisable wall there are just a few things it can be. (1) if it happens everytime at about the same distance, you have a kink somewhere in your line that is stopping the line from comming off the spool as far as it should...strip your line back on the original spoll it came on and wind it back on making sure it contains no kinks or knots. (2) replace line (3) when you are casting, if overhand, you ar carrying the rod too far forward before releasing the thumbar...this will cause your bait to dive straight down, no distance. try releasing the thumbar earlier, say 10 to 11 o'clock.you can also get some long accurate cast by a sidearm cast. Hope this helps some..going to the ranch next week and target shoot a little and trick afew of those Floridas! good hunting and fishing to all!!!!!

Once you adjust that magnet and start casting.....twist your wrist sideways as you cast so at the end of the cast the side of the reel is facing the ground, this will help with accuracy a little when you are new to baitcasters.
