On this an other forums I have been seeing quite a few picks of people Garands. They all have pretty nice stocks on them.

Am I the only one who got a Garand from the CMP with a stock that looks like a tank ran it over or do you guys replace your stocks?

I have collected 1911's for years,in the process I have several 03 Springfields and 1917 eddystones but I have never fooled with a Garand, thinking about getting a couple from CMP ,I qualify and would just have to send in my paperwork with my order, how bad are the service grades ? for just the few dollars more I think they would be better than the rack grade.I want shooters and later can always rebarrel them if needed,I can get new barrels for $125 and it cant cost that much to get a good smith to install one but I dont want to have to rebuild the whole rife just to be able to shoot it,if I want it pretty I can buy new wood from CMP, but worry about spending wads of cash just getting it into shooting condition.

Anyone wanting to order the Service grade M-1's should do it. Sent in an order the 16th and was notified today they will be shipped to be received tomorrow. That's quick. Thanks to the CMP for fast service.

Has anyone ever bought one of the Garand Service Grades from the CMP?

I see they have some in for just under $600 and have been considering one. I personally think they are one of the best and most tested battle rifles in the past 100 years.

I think I want a M1 Garand. Im not planning on being extremely picky but dont want to end up with a really beat up one either. Anybody bought from the CMP before? Can you get a nice one from them in the $650 range, service grade?

Or do you think itd be worth it to spend a couple hundred more to get a known quality one on the auction side here? Could it be worth the gamble? I suppose i could sell or trade it if I wasnt happy with the one I get.

I am considering picking up a CMP Garand, but I find myslef in the following quandry. Please hear me out: I am also a college student, so money is not always readily available. How much longer do you think the CMP will be able to offer M1 Garands at the current affordable prices? Would I be smartest to go ahead and get one and put it on my credit card (I hate using credit cards) or hold out and get one this fall once I have cash at hand to pay for it? I am really torn, because as a history buff, I really want an M1, and I DO NOT want to miss the boat on this opportunity. Any adivce would be greatly appreciated.

Ed...It is truly the only way to buy a Garand. You are guaranteed not to get a weapon that has been dragged through the mud for the last 45 years by some Korean, Thai, or Taiwanese "doggie". I have bought six rifles through the DCM/CMP. My first one was an all original serial number Springfield, in my stupidity because I wanted a shooter I got rid of the barrel and put on a heavy weight Obermeyer barrel...rifle shot great!!! Value plummeted!!! My other rifles have all been in superb condition...plus if you don't go to the well too often you can sometimes call them up and ask for something a little special...no they are not going to give you an M1D in your box...but on my last purchase I asked for a nice shooter and they sent me an Ledder-Kenney Arsenal rebuild with a brand new (1966) never fired barrel. Weapon was rebuilt in 1967 and put away in storage. The weapon has all of its original cartouches as well as the L-K cartouche. Plus after you get the weapon keep your paperwork and box FOREVER!! It will increase the value of your weapon between $75-$100 just for having it and proving that you do indeed have a CMP/DCM rifle. Also right now they have the Danish rifles that are about $100 less than the strictly American ones. The Danish rifles may have some parts made by Beretta but they are equal in quality to the American ones....you just have to live with a Danish crest on your weapon. Also sometime after the beginning of the new year the CMP is going to start taking orders for the "collectible" grade of weapons....this can be near total original Springfields, certain models of Winchesters and some H and R models. If you want a shooter I wouldn't spend the extra money and wait for one of them. Also the CMP has made a really big deal about WWII veterans getting some really nice ones. One of my very good friends who fought at the Chosun Reservoir during Korea also called them up,sent a copy of his DD214, and after telling them the serial number of his Winchester M1 they sent him a Winchester within a few thousand serial numbers of his. Bottom line it doesn't get any better than that. Beach

Got mine just before they went to $400 (think it was $310). Minor amount of paperwork, fire 55 rounds at a CMP affiliated range, and then (by gosh!), they SENT it to me by fedex! Being a non-FFL, that was a hoot in itself. Good, basic gun, does everything it's supposed to, and it has that undeniable historic "cachet" that no money can buy.
