Council bats around gun ordinance - - - again2002-01-15Journal StaffREDMOND -- An ordinance to regulate gun ranges here has made its way back to the City Council after months of debate between council members and Interlake Sporting Association members. Redmond doesn't have any shooting facilities, other than the indoor police range, but it plans to annex the range and the Northeast Rose Hill neighborhood this year.Despite several drafts, the ordinance likely will raise the hackles of some Interlake members, who have complained that it is aimed at putting the 52-year range out of business.Interlake has been closed since September after an errant bullet fired from the range landed about three feet from an employee at a nearby business. The King County Sheriff's Office determined that a Kirkland police officer, who fired the stray bullet, was misusing the range.Interlake supporters have testified that the proposed $5,000 deposit for consultant fees and inspections is unreasonable. They also say that Interlake should not be required to reapply yearly, incurring more costs, if no modifications have been made to the facility. And they have argued that the city should not require the range to comply with the National Rifle Association's ``Range Source Book.'' The book is only meant to be used as a guideline, not a design standard, Interlake attorney Bill McKay said. The council is expected to vote on the ordinance tonight.POLITICS GOVERNMENT INDUSTRY SAFETY ACCIDENT PREVENTION PROFESSIONAL ETHICS FIREARMS http://www.eastsidejournal.com/sited/story/html/79588

Very short sighted. The NRA range safety program has helped keep a lot of ranges safe, and open. There designs are costly, but they are a lot cheaper than designing their own, and they are proven.
