Gun-Control Advocates Pleased with Progress3/6/2002 Email Print Subscribe A newly released University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll shows that the gun-control lobby is making headway in getting tighter measures passed in the state legislature, the Boston Globe reported March 3."The tide is swinging our way. We've made some progress," said state Sen. Burt Cohen. The poll of 555 New Hampshire adults found that residents in the state overwhelmingly support tighter gun laws. In particular, 91 percent of those surveyed supported updating New Hampshire's background-check laws to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.In addition, 91 percent approved of background checks for all gun sales at gun shows, while 83 percent supported background checks for all gun sales, whether through classified ads, flea markets, or gun shows. The survey also showed that 84 percent favored childproofing handguns with basic safety features so small children can't fire them; 87 percent supported safety courses for people who want to carry concealed weapons; 87 percent believed people should be 21 to carry a concealed firearm; and 79 percent agreed that the federal ban on assault weapons should be renewed after it sunsets in two years."We recognize the constitutional right to bear arms, but let's make sure kids, felons, and people adjudicated mentally ill aren't getting guns," said Laurel Redden of Salem, state coordinator of the New Hampshire chapter of the Million Mom March.Chuck Drew, executive director of New Hampshire Ceasefire, said the survey shows that residents, including gun owners, want "sensible" legislation."The New Hampshire state Constitution gives people the right to own firearms. They also have responsibility to ensure everyone's safety. We hope legislators will listen to the majority of voters in this state," he said. http://www.jointogether.org/gv/news/summaries/reader/0,2061,548753,00.html
