Jacksonville, NC pawn shops, stupid or lazy???

Ya know I just got here in NC, and today I needed to go look for an FFL to do a weapons transfer for me. Guess what? None of the pawn shops I went to would do it. The standard answer was ' we only buy guns, and sell guns, and pawn guns, we dont do transfers'. WTF over? What kind of idiocy have I walked into here? I was refered to a local gun shop which I knew of, and had been to before, but it was a little further out, which was why I hadnt gone there yet, so I went there. He does it no problem. I told him of my experience, he said, ' yeah, its a lot of paperwork, thats why we charge so much for it. What kind of idiot am I? I just listened to him bullcrap me, and agreed with what he had to say. PAPERWORK!!!!????? Its the same darn paperwork you fill out to buy a gun!!!!! Nothing different, no big deal, thats what ALL the pawn shops I have done business with all over the U.S. have done for me, and told me. They are all glad to do it and take my money. These people down here must be stupid, they're missing out on the opportunity to make hundreds of dollars a year off of only 2 or 3 people like me, and thats just a few people!! I know I paid for my local pawn shops FFL fee for one year by doing transfers with them, over the course of the 3.5 yrs. that I was doing business with them. All they have to do is take the serial number down, let me pack it up in front of them, if they dont want to pack it, and take it to the postal service of their choice, how hard is that? I thought I'd heard of lazy, but I was wrong, now I've heard of lazy. How else can you make 25.00 in less than 30 minutes while sitting down in a pawn shop, without selling a thing? Oh well, thought some of you might get a kick out of, 'WE DONT DO THAT, WE ONLY BUY AND SELL AND PAWN GUNS'.

From the sound of your post, you are going to ship a gun. Just wondering why do you need a FFL for that?

If I knew then, what I know now.

    rob,
A lot of these guys don't want to be bothered with the NICS check or worry about any liability resulting from the transfer. Most of them are just ignorant about transfers, it's amazing how littlew some FFL holders know about the law. I went to a Class 3 dealer and had to explain parts of the law to him. Semper Fi!!!

    Black Roses,
I got the FFL to take care of it, for me, a gun dealer. Thanks for looking though. You must be getting tired, you missed it in my post. Sorry you went to the trouble, but I really appreciate you would do that.
    Pickenup,
I cant ship a firearm when selling it across state lines, legally, without going through an FFL. You have to ship from an FFL to an FFL at least when going across state lines. Far as I know, the only time you dont have to go through an FFL is when in the same state, but then you have to ship to an FFL if you arent delivering the gun yourself. DO NOT QUOTE ME ON ANY OF THIS, its just worked for me in the past this way, God knows it could have changed last night!! Probably varies from state to state also.

    While you`re at it,
    why don`t you tell him
    who he can hire.

    Maybe you can rearange
    his displays.

    Just tell him:

Found money. I charge $15 and it takes 10 minutes. I could stand 15 to 20 transfers a week. Pawn shop guy is lazy, maybe uninformed. Most likely an employee.

    I bet Pelican does transfers.

    Interstate,

Found money is right! Knew a guy once that owned a grocery store and charged $2.00 (that was in the 70's) to cash a payroll check. I laughed at him, and said why do you even want to mess with it for only $2.00? He looked me right in the eye, and said "found money".

"I don't have anything invested in it, I have the money from selling things in my store, and it's a 100% profit!" "When I can cash 500 checks a week (from the factory across the street) that translates into $1000.00 which is sometimes more than I make in profit from my store!". "Since they can cash their checks here, they'll buy beer, cigarettes and milk, etc. which only improves my business".

I stopped laughing, and learned a good lesson in economics --- sounds like those pawn shops need to learn it as well.

I might just print this thread up when its finished and hand it to the owners of those shops some time down the road, should make for a neat expression on their face.

    I agree,it`s "found money",
    but what the hell,give the
    guy a break,he`s there to
do things the way he wants
    to,not to be a phr!&&in`
    servant to the customer.

    Whoever came up with that
    "The customer is always right"
    concept ought to be shot.

robsguns, i ran into the exact same problem there in 97. Camp lejeune was good to me but the local pawn morons are stupid and crazy. I ended up just driving home to get all my guns.(got to lejuene from gitmo)This time im taking them with me, reguardless of how i go. try down in wimington. plus its a nice little town. BTW, what do you do? I'll have to look you up when i get there in JAN. Unless the monitor gets squirrely and sends me to japan. any way, keep looking.

Give your kids roots and wings. and dont forget the guns!!

robsguns; I copy and pasted this off of this site (GB)Federal Law requires that all modern firearms be shipped only to a holder of a valid Federal Firearms License (FFL). The recipient must be have an FFL; however the sender is not required to have one.And then this one.May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?
A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. Then it goes on to say that you can not (as a nonlicensee) ship a handgun through the postal servise, but you can ship a long gun. You can ship a handgun FFL to FFL through the postal service. There might be rules in different states that have an effect on this though.I would not want to see you wasting your money for something you don't need.

Sarge, NC is a little bit strange anyway! I can't buy a gun there when I'm down there! I have to give them a signed FFL and have it shipped back here to the shop where I pick it up but you can come up here in VA and buy one!! That's long guns too, not handguns! Go figure! GHD

    pickenup,
You may be right, but I dont have much choice I think, since its across state lines, I believe that makes quite a bit of difference. Either way though, I gotta keep the peace with the buyer and the buyer's FFL, or I cant sell it to him. Its ok, I got a really good offer from the guy, and he seems like a really nice fella.

I can tell you this, NC has some very unusual requirements when it comes to handgun purchases. It is more local law driven than anything else.

    Good luck

pickenup is right even if you are shipping across state lines you do not need a FFL to sent to a FFL a rifle by mail and a pistol by another carrier as long as its shipped to a FFL holder

Won't the damn PX do it? It was my only choice in the desert for a while. The PX over on New River should still sell guns. If so, I bet they will hook it up.

    Welcome to North Kackalackey.

Ryan you do not need the FFL to ship if you are selling to a person out of state. The person on the recieving end needs to send you a copy of an FFL to send it to and let them do the worrying about paying transfer fees. This does sort of put a bind in things as far as me being willing to loan you my 480 Ruger though. We'll work something out.

I sent a pistol via FedEX from Iowa to Illinois this past winter--no problems and quite legal. I just gave FEDEX a copy of the receiving dealer's FFL.

I have shipped guns all over the place and usally do it myself if its a long gun , I just go down to the local UPS pickup and show them the FFL where its going and off it goes, if its a handgun them I check to see who has the better price US postal is cheaper but I have to use a ffl on my end to use them , so have to figure in his cost also to see which way to go ,, also I use GB to check to make sure the FFL I'm shipping to is good, just go to sellers page and then to verify FFL, put in their number and there you go, print it out for my records or give it to my FFL if hes doing it
