Killeen, Texas and surrounding areas...
Hey, I may (very very high, but not 100% chance) be moving to the greater Killeen, TX area!
Oh MAN, I cannot wait to get there- esp since it means leaving MD!

So... please help a guy out:

Tell me everything i need to know about the place!

Best places to live?
Best gunshops?
Best gunsmiths?
Nearest shooting ranges?
Nice communities?
Homes for sale with some land attached?
etc etc etc...
All the good stuff!

I am SO pumped about the possibility of getting back to TX that i get a big dopey grin just thinking about it!

We've got a couple of friends that live in Killeen and adjoining towns. When you get ready, send a note and will give you a couple of names and phone #'s.

Several lakes, decent hunting as BW states, friendly community. Not sure myself about prices, etc.

I was stationed there. Off base IS A DRY COUNTY, or at least it was when I was there. Hope you don't drink. Bring a car with you the dealerships are not civilian friendly.

Well, I'm in Waco, moved here from Annapolis, MD. I can tell you a little about the Waco area.
Best places to live: In Waco, the best places are in Hewitt, Woodway and Lake Shore areas. Lake Shore is probably the ritziest. Don't know what your budget is or what you're looking for, but homes here are SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than the Annapolis, MD area. Most are singles story ranch homes...very few two story homes around here.

Best gunshop: Praco Gun & Pawn. There's really only one other one in town, and they're rarely open. Lots of pawn shops in town, and most of them have used guns for sale. We have about one gun show every 6 weeks. The best gun around is at the Dallas Market Hall in Dallas and is worth the 100 mile drive.

Best gunsmiths: Depends on what you want to shoot. For IPSC, try www.brazoscustom.com or www.dawsonprecision.com .

Shooting ranges: In Waco, we have a place called "The Outhouse". It's a crappy 4-5 lane indoor range with poor ventilation. They charge about $10 to shoot all day. The hot ticket is to join the Central Texas Rifle and Pistol Club. They have several ranges from a 50ft. range, to a 25 yard range, 100-200yard rifle range, and a couple of bays dedicated to IPSC shooting. You can shoot from sun up to sun down, 7 days a week. There are organized shooting matches for several different disciplines, but usually only on a couple of the bays. You must be an NRA member (you can sign up when you pay your first dues) and the annual dues are $45/year, which is an absolute STEAL! See www.ctrpc.com There's also the Waco Trap & Skeet club, which is a top notch trap and skeet club. See www.wacoskeet.com for more info.

That's about all the info I've got unless you've got some more specific questions.

    AH YES...lovely Killeen, Texas.
Been there. Well, saw it from the air as I got lower and lower to the ground. I was hanging from a parachute at the time. Five other young Airmen and I were invited to leave a C-47 that was losing altitude rapidly due to damage done in a very violent thunderstorm. Probably called "wind-shear" now. Landed in a freshly plowed field in mud about 10 inches deep. Good ol' gooey Texas mud. One set of Class A's were now a lovely shade of reddish-brown.
That's all I know about Killeen.

Actually...I can't swear that all that stain was mud.[:O]

I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!<BR>

Some nutjob back in the 80's went into a restaurant in Killeen packing like 2-3 auto pistols. He whipped them out and before he was through he aced something like a dozen innocent patrons. Nobody was armed I believe due to the fact there was no concealed carry on the books at that time.[:(!]

Come to think of it,There is an indoor range(100yd.)/gunshop about 40 miles south in Pflugerville(between Austin and Round Rock).I've never used it so I don't know about rates etc.,and I know there's several outdoor ranges scattered around.Heck, when you get settled in,just come to my place and we can get out to 500yds.[:D]

Yup, military. Fort Hood and all that stuff.
Not that I drink a whole lot, but I do try to have a drink a day since i am way over the age limit and approaching heart attack age. So I would like ot at least buy alcohol. So which county is dry? The WHOLE COUNTY?????
I plan on making a trip up to Waco soon as i get there to visit American Derringer.
What i really want are these things in a straight line beteen my house and Ft. Hood main gate: a shooting range (preferably outdoor long range rifle capable), a gym with lots of free weights, a strip mall with grocery store and all the usual stuff for just living, a catholic church, a post office and a gas station- not necessarily in that order.
Yup, that'd be my little heaven on earth!
Say, anyone have names of who teaches the required course for CCW in the area? I let my TX ccw expire when i got sent to the MDSR (maryland socialist republic).
Thanks also for the generous offers for names/numbers to call when i get ready to come out. I'll fly out to house hunt in a couple months and I'd love to put some faces to the online pseudonyms.
I am so thrilled to get back to TX that I may just have a 'Moving out of MD giveaway'. i am in the (loooooong) process of cleaning out my room and will see what i can find to give away.

It's been 20+ years since I've been in that area - so my info would be outta date - Worked in Temple and Belton - Belton lake area is kinda nice, if you can find a place out that way. Lots of good and bad memories from the Ft.Hood area - both of my Brothers were stationed there in the late 70s...

    Tis Baptist country my friend...
alcohol is of course still available down there but not like up here in free country! [;)]

On the permit, when you get down here we'll get you with the right people. Maybe BW and I can meet ya when you fly in, but need plenty of advance warning for the calender...that's me now...BW is sorta semi-retired. [:D]

Man, you guys are pretty darn generous!
What I mean is sure I like to meet you all! Absolutely!
Advance warning: well I'll be heading out in May or June. I will give more exact dates as soon as I check in with the Co. as i have pre-approved dates. Then if your offer still stands I can get you the actual travel info when i know it.
500 yards out your back door, huh? Where can i get a place like that? :)
I did a quick mapquest and temple is 27 miles from Killeen. Not too bad, esp since I hear traffic is almost non-existent.
Looks like nice little place, though.
I am going to look into some other places as well. Any places outside Killeen but closer than Temple?
Not to sound petty or anything but i will be driving in to work in the 0500-ish time frame; so a half hour of driving is a fair amount of sleep!
    This is great.
