Behind The Scenes

Yesterday flew from Detroit to Phoenix and saw something never before witnessed. Shortly prior to pulling away from the gate two undercover agents boarded the plane and removed a Mid Eastern male from the plane. Immediately upon his removal the Mid Eastern male sitting next to me starting getting extremely nervious. A few minutes later the same two agents were back and asked the man next to me to come with them. The agents then came back and removed the two Mid Eastern males carry-on baggage, checked the pockets in front of their seats, under their seats, etc.

Nothing more was said, the two Mid Eastern males did not return and our flight took off 10/15 minutes later.

After we were in the air the flight attendant quietly informed us that the agents were DEA agents and the ordeal was over drugs and not a terrorist attempt.

I think that the two removed males checked baggage was either X-rayed or sniffed by the dogs and found that they were transporting drugs. Either way there are things going on behind the scenes that makes our air travel safer.

Scary thought? Don't think so. I thought it rather comforting that something was working as it should.

I know this might sound strange, but bear with me for a minute. I grew up in Dearborn Mi. which has the highest arab population outside the middle-east. A large percentage of arab-americans are business owners and alot of the money which is generated in this area finds its way back to the middle east.Have you ever heard the saying" Never poop where you eat" that saying holds true here. Militant arabs might be ruthless but not stupid. They also know that thier friends and family would be targets of hate crimes should an attack come from the Detroit area. So flying out of Detroit-Metro is probably the safest airport to travel from. Although in your situation I probably been a little freaked out too.......lazy

    lazywallrus,

You are absolutely correct in reference to the large Arab population in the Detroit area with Dearborn being the largest. The reason for this is Henry Ford imported Arabs to work in his plants during the 1920's, 30's and early 40's because they could take the heat on the non airconditioned asembly lines better than caucasians.

I do not think the two Mid Eastern individuals removed from the plane where of noble standing, I say this because of physical appearance and both were speaking in Arabic not English. Were they Arab- American as you speculate I think they would have carried themselves in a more professional manner.

If you refer to the subject title, 'Behind The Scenes', my reason for posting was to make all aware that our safety is being watched behind the scenes without our knowledge. Yes, there was reason for concern but having experienced such an incident it actually makes me feel more secure on a plane.

Im with you 100% but if things had worked as they should have they nor their Luggage would never gotten on the plane. And it is a scary thought as to what could have happened with what ever they boarded with that got taken off.Im glad it worked out safely for you and the others on board Airborne.

Airborne, My apologies for straying from the subject. As for your decriptions of the arab/arab-americans they were probably unshaven, looked like they got dressed in the dark in a second hand store, and more than likely smelled of B.O. and tabouli salad. That description fits atleast 50% of the gas station and party store owners in the detoit area.

I really dont feel any safer knowing the DEA recieved a tip about two people trafficking drugs. I just happened to be two arabs. If it was two Swedish guys we probably wouldnt be talking about this.

Interesting topic, airborne. I live and work in the Dearborn/Detroit area. It's weird, living in the midst of people that might be sympathetic to our enemies. Just today I visited my local gas station to fill up. I noticed that they've installed "bullet-proof" glass around the teller station and the teller is, of course, Arabic.

I'm not sure what to make of it. Honestly, I'm concerned. But, our enemies could be anywhere, right?
