Cleaning the M1A rifle

The topic of firearm maintenance has come up many times, I know (sorry). But, after reviewing the old posts I still didn't find an answer to my specific question, so here it is:To what degree must a rifle like the M1A be cleaned after shooting (say, 100 rounds)? I always clean the components like the barrel, bolt and exposed surfaces after shooting even 1 round. BUT, do I need to disassemble the gas cylinder and piston, etc. after each trip to the range? And, if not, when do these parts need to be cleaned/lubed?Thanks

The gas system only needs to be cleaned when the piston does not move freely with gravity.cpermd

I bought mine back in 1990. An old Viet Nam Vet told me to clean the piston every time you use it but NEVER NEVER oil it. So I use hoppes No.9 and it has never never never jammed. I have never seen a more reliable rifle yet. Yes that includes ak, ar, Fn and all the others. So take that advice from a seasioned Viet Nam vet. He trusted his life with it and I trust my life with it. Good Luck.

Royc38 is absolutely right. (Not that he needs reinforcement from me.) I don't have the M1A, I have it's father the Garand. After every session I TOTALLY disassemble it and clean everything. I probably don't need to but it's a habit I've gotten into after 40 years with the thing. There's no such thing as TOO clean when it comes to something you may have to trust your life to.Mudge
I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!

Thanks guys. I usually do disassemble all of my firearms completely after each use. But with this rifle I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated. Lots O parts. I'll clean it thoroughly tonight and familiarize myself with everything. Thanks for the advice...
