That's right, in only 5.5 hours I am off to Tawas, Michigan for the annual smelt-dipping weekend. We will, hopefully, get lucky and get some smelt. They aren't running yet, the water is too cold (it needs to be between 42 and 44 degrees F). But, this weekend is supposed to be nice so maybe we'll get lucky!

In any case, the brown trout steelhead and lake trout are in and the jumbo perch are biting!

I can smell the fish fry now....

Should be a great weekend to wet a line here in Northern Illinois. I caught 9 LM Bass last night. Nothing real big, but more than enough to make for a fun evening.....

Well, this weekend's fishing report is pretty ugly. Caught a whopping 2 smelt and 1 perch. The weather was great and we had a blast, but the fish just weren't running.

Pelican, smelt are little silver fish that look a lot like large minnows. They swim in huge schools into the rivers during spring to spawn. Fisherman will line up along the shores and on piers with dip nets trying to catch them. When they're running, it's not uncommon to fill up a 5 gallon bucket with them in 1/2 hour. They're GREAT deep fried with a beer batter!

We did watch a BIG brown trout cruise alongside the pier for about 15 minutes. He was just slowly swimming around looking for smelt to eat. Tried catching him but he just laughed at us..:)

I used to go smelting, I think I drank more than I fished though! They always tried to get us ladies to bite the head off one of the first smelt.......do you do this? They said it was tradition!

The worst part of smelting was having to clean all those darn things!!

Concealed....Isn't Smelt what they call Grunion on the west coast? Further south on the west coast we used to hit the "Grunion Runs" down into Baja. Then when I moved to Northern Kalifornia, they call these "Surf Fish". Any difference, you think? We catch them the same using a net between two poles and just scooping them out of the surf.

I don't know if grunion are the same or not??? They sound very similar.

Yeah, Ms. Beast, I bit the heads off of BOTH. I had to because we filmed the whole trip on my video camera and my brother-in-law forgot to press record the first time (because we too were drinking heavily! :)).

I laughed my butt off at one guy who bit the head off of his first one and almost gagged. When I walked up I congratulated him for biting the head off of a shiner minnow!
