Concealed-Weapons Apps Generate $1.5 Million8:00 p.m. EST March 19, 2002 - Law enforcement officials have seen a boom in concealed-weapons permits in Michigan, Local 4 reported Tuesday. More than 40,000 people have applied for permits since the law changed in July. The applications have generated about $1.5 million for state and county governments. The Michigan State Police have received about $700,000 from the permit fees. Before the new law took effect, applicants paid a $49 fee for a concealed-weapons permit. The rate has increased to $84 since the law was enacted. Oakland and Wayne County sheriffs in July asked lawmakers to triple some of the fees related to the weapons permits. Law enforcement personnel said at the time that the number of people requesting permits jumped from four or five to 125 a day. Under the new law, people over 21 who complete a firearms training course and pass a criminal background check are eligible for a concealed weapons permit.
