Grandfather Killed Defending Family, HomeDETROIT, 8:24 a.m. EST January 15, 2002 - Police are searching for the murderers of a local grandfather at Christmastime in Detroit. The victim's brother was on his way to see the victim, known as "Duke," , when police said that three men hit him deliberately. They demanded money to pay for the damages, Local 4 reported. Duke's brother reportedly agreed to have the men follow him to the victim's home so that he could get the cash to pay them. The men arrived at Duke's home in the middle of the night. When he wouldn't pay, he was beaten to death on his porch by two of the men, Local 4 reported. His family said that he knew it was a scam. Local 4 reported that Duke died defending his home and his brother. "We asked 'What did they use on him?,'" the victim's nephew, Rich Manigault, said. "So it was my assumption that they probably did use the tire iron on him as well because he was beaten very badly." Police believe that one of the suspects tried to stop the beating. "Please come forward," Manigault said. "If you do, my family will make it more than worth your while." Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (800) SPEAK-UP. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward, and the family will give an additional $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest.
