Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse (MAHA) and other advocates said they plan to make gun control a key issue in the 2002 governor's race, the Baltimore Sun reported May 23.
Advocates plan to focus on Republican candidate Rep. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and his record on firearms legislation. According to the gun-control groups, Ehrlich's voting record shows a longtime opposition to tougher gun laws.
"He's not at all about preventing gun crime," said Ginni Wolf, executive director of MAHA. "His stance is the National Rifle Association (NRA) stance."
As a state delegate, Ehrlich voted against a bill to ban Saturday-night specials. In the U.S. Congress, he voted to repeal a national assault-weapons ban.
Ehrlich said his voting record reflects his belief that gun violence should be addressed by punishing the illegal use of guns rather than adding more restrictions to gun use.
"My focus has always been on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals," Ehrlich said. "We all want the same thing. How we get there is very different. They simply don't like guns."
Ehrlich faces Democrat Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the state's lieutenant governor, in the gubernatorial race.
A spokesman for Townsend said she strongly supports Maryland's ban on Saturday-night specials and the state and federal bans on assault weapons.

Mass. Lawmakers Want Power to Review Gun Regulation

Gun-rights advocates are behind a bill in the Massachusetts legislature that would give lawmakers the authority to review consumer-protection regulations proposed by the attorney general's office, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reported May 22.
Pro-gun groups claim that Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly is improperly using his regulatory authority to restrict handguns.
The bill was proposed by state Rep. George N. Peterson Jr. (R-Grafton) and Sen. Guy W. Glodis (D-Auburn), who accused Reilly of using consumer protection regulations as an excuse to impose burdensome restrictions on gun makers, preventing them from selling high-end firearms in the state.
"If you had a case of poorly constructed firearms, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but he's using the regulatory process to take firearms away from the law-abiding public," said Peterson. "Clearly he's overstepped his authority."
Reilly said they he is simply trying to enforce safety standards. "We're not trying to ban guns," he said. "We're making sure they are safe and out of the reach of kids, and if it drops, it doesn't discharge."

Mayor Daley's Obsession With Gun Control Threatens Nation's
Nuclear Security, Says ISRA

CHICAGO, May 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released
today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):
Many have wondered just how far Chicago Mayor Daley is willing
to go in his quest to abolish civilian firearm ownership. A recent
vote in the Illinois House made it clear that even the threat of a
terrorist strike on a nuclear power plant could not * the Daley
machine to support sensible gun safety legislation.
On May 23, the Illinois House passed SB1936 by an overwhelming
85 to 24 margin. Contained in the bill was language clarifying
licensing requirements for out of state security guards who work at
nuclear power stations. Had the bill not passed, nuclear plants
located along the Illinois border would be forced to trim their
security forces by half, thus opening the door to terrorist attacks
on the facilities.
Most of the House members voting against SB1936 were staunch
allies of Chicago Mayor Daley and his gun-grabbing machine.
Opponents of the bill objected to additional language contained
therein allowing citizens to take home firearm safety classes --
even if they did not hold a valid Firearm Owner's Identification
Card. Despite the fact that greater access to firearm safety
training would be given to many thousands of Illinois citizens, the
Daley forces attempted to scuttle this life-saving bill.
The Daley bloc's opposition to SB1936 falls in line with the
mayor's statement that, if it were up to him, nobody would be
allowed to own a firearm. Using Daley's line of thinking, it would
follow then that citizens would have no need for gun safety
training if they were not allowed to own firearms in the first
place.
Fortunately, the vast majority of Illinois House members
understand that it is more important to protect our nuclear power
stations from terrorist attack than it is to placate the
tempestuous Daley.
The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful and
responsible firearms ownership. For nearly a century, the ISRA has
represented the interests of over 1.5 million law-abiding Illinois
gun owners.
