Gun Sales Still High One Month After Terrorist Attacks Firearms are still topping the lists of survival tools for many Americans, and local gun shop owners say new buyers want more than just a hand-gun to keep at home. They're also looking into rifles and concealed weapons permits. At the Gun Broker gun shop in Tigard, workers are filling out back orders and helping new customers choose the weapons that suit them best. Ever since the terrorist attacks, manager Shane Sibert says, it's been busy. He adds, "We've probably seen a 50% increase in sales." The recent flood of buyers is full of first timers. Sibert says the attacks have heightened their awareness, making personal safety a big priority, and not just at home. He explains, "We've seen a huge increase in the concealed weapons classes. So it leads me to believe that, yeah, it is increasing. People want something they can have with them all of the time, in case something happens, and they'll be prepared for it."Twelve guage shot guns and hand guns are big sellers right now, especially the 9mm Baretta, the same gun used by US military personnel. Sibert says, "It's a reliable gun; accurate." But Sibert recommends the 6-38 Smith and Wesson revolver for people, who want to concealed their weapon. The hammer is barely noticable, and Sibert says, "It's shrouded. So if you carry it concealed, it won't snag on your clothing." Brad Fischer is a gun collecter. He says lately, he's seen gun shops and gun shows packed with people looking for protection and a little peace of mind. Leigh Wing is buying his first gun, but not out of fear. He says the terrorist attacks have reminded him of his rights and his responsiblities as an American. He says, "I think it's an important skill to have for every American, to know how to shoot a gun and know what you're doing with it." Workers at the Gun Broker say they've also been having a lot more women come in to sign up for classes that teach them how to load and shoot a gun the right way. http://www.foxpdx.com/Global/story.asp?S=504280&nav=2cFj367m56bm
