Guns should be kept away from children

DR. PETER GOTT

DR.
GOTT

DEAR DR. GOTT: I read the column in which you stated that, when children are present in the home, firearms should be kept locked or field-stripped. I took your advice and disassembled my trusty Colt .45.

I have also framed your column and will show it to any burglar who breaks in. I'll request that he not harm me or my family until I have re-assembled the weapon so I can blow his butt away, as we are legally able to do in N.J.

I wonder how many rapes can be ascribed to your advice. I suggest that you don't dabble in social issues.

DEAR READER: Good point. I won't.

I think that too many of us in the media are Commie leftists. If you're going to own a durn gun, it oughtta be ready for action. I believe that burglars, in particular, ought to be gunned down, wiped out, eliminated -- even if the supposed ''perp'' is a d elivery boy from Pizza Hut.

And, as far as rapes are concerned, any self-respecting girl should carry a weapon. Where? I don't know. Since most sexual assaults are performed by a person known to the victim, saying ''no'' and enlisting help is not nearly as comforting as blowing the sucker away, even though he is the high school football star and will enter Harvard in the fall on a full scholarship.

Don't get me going! Keep those assault weapons primed and cocked. Load up that shotgun with No. 2 shot. Keep your semi-automatic right under the pillow on the bed, where it belongs in case some freak silently enters your house and confronts you in the bedroom, demanding that you hand over your collection of baseball cards.

Hey, seriously, I keep two loaded pistols -- a Colt .45 and a .357 magnum -- hidden in my house. But I have no children living at home. So I don't worry about the firearms being misused.
