Board May Arm APS OfficersThe Albuquerque Public Schools board on Monday will consider whether to allow the district's police officers to be armed on patrol.APS officers, many of whom are former police officers and sheriff's deputies with other agencies, are not allowed to carry weapons, even though they have been certified by the state law enforcement academy."It's unfair for us to be asking these guys to pick a burglar at 3 o'clock in the morning with no protection," said Gil Lovato, APS's police director. "It just isn't right."Armed Albuquerque police officers and Bernalillo County sheriff's deputies currently patrol middle schools and high schools during school days, but APS officers respond to calls at schools 24 hours a day.An unscientific survey conducted by KOAT Action 7 News over the weekend found 67 percent of respondents in favor of arming the school http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/koat/20011001/lo/916669_1.html
