Pilot says she could pull triggerBy DON HUDSONCharlotte native Jennifer Howren will make her first flight as a commercial pilot into Charlotte/Douglas International Airport on Wednesday, one day after Atlantic Coast Airlines starts flights from Washington's Dulles Airport.Howren, 34, is a co-pilot on the Canadair regional jet. A 1986 graduate of South Mecklenburg High and UNC Greensboro, Howren said she is one of about 10 women who are pilots in the ACA chain.ACA is affiliated with United Airlines, and has the same paint scheme, but operates as an independent. ACA already operates flights from United's Chicago hub to Charlotte. She started flying four years ago, and it took her 19 months to qualify to become a flight instructor. From there, she logged enough hours to become a jet pilot. She says she's open to the suggestion that pilots be allowed to carry guns on board for safety."There are bullets that are lethal yet will not penetrate the walls of the airplane and compromise the integrity of the cabin," Howren said. "It is a question, whether each individual pilot standing behind that gun is willing to use it. The cockpit doors are hinged in the middle. They would be hard to kick in."Could she use a gun?"I could do that," she saidPlayer Retention: The Charlotte Hornets could learn something about retention from the N.C. Dance Theater. Mia Cunningham, who plays Cinderella in this weekend's season opener, is starting her 11th season, as is Kati Hanlon Mayo. Heather Malloy is starting her 13th year.
