Hopeful Salmon gets NRA nod in governor bid

The National Rifle Association threw its considerable support behind gubernatorial candidate Matt Salmon on Monday.

The Mesa Republican is the only political candidate that the NRA and its 100,000 members in Arizona are officially supporting this year. Salmon, considered the front-runner in a three-way GOP primary, said he's flattered by the support.

"There's not an endorsement that means more to me than the endorsement of the National Rifle Association," Salmon told a crowd outside the state Capitol.

"The NRA isn't just about lobbying. I'm going to win this race, and I'm going to defend the Second Amendment with every fiber of my being."

Todd Rathner, a Tucson resident who sits on the NRA's board of directors, said that the group will help the former congressman through e-mails and magazines and through promotion by word of mouth.
