Constitution promises gun ownership for all
The column by Jack Anderson on May 10 is another attempt to convince the public our Constitution does not guarantee an individual right to firearms' ownership. Anderson pleads for "reasonable controls" on law-abiding citizens and cites statistics, various court rulings and quotations to buttress their argument.

The Supreme Court ruling of 1939 Anderson refers to is, no doubt, United States v. Miller, which did, in fact, link gun ownership to the so-called "militia." The truly important interpretation, which Anderson omitted, is Supreme Court Justice McReynolds', who authored the court's opinion and therefore the entire court's description of the militia - "civilians primarily, soldiers on occasion."
Justice McReynolds went on to write that "...the history and legislation of Colonies and States ... show plainly enough that the Militia comprised all males..." The court actually affirmed what our founding fathers considered the militia to be - the general citizenry. Richard Henry Lee's words, "A militia when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves, and render regular troops in great measure unnecessary."
Anderson's assertion that Attorney General John Ashcroft's position is akin to that of the National Rifle Association's "fear" of a government confiscation of guns, most likely is a subtle attempt to tarnish Ashcroft's ideology by linking him to the NRA. Confiscation of law-abiding citizens' firearms has already occurred. Former President Clinton instructed HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo to "get around the Constitution" in disarming all residents of a large, crime-ridden public housing complex.
Anderson states the answer to this dilemma "lies in adherence to the literal meaning of the Second Amendment that addresses a well-regulated militia." Anderson's idea of this "literal meaning" is one preferred by himself and his comrades, not the meaning our Founding fathers held.
As recently as 1990 the Supreme Court (United States v. Verdugo-Urquidez, 494 U.S. 259, 265) held that the phrase "the people" referred to in the Second Amendment, has the same meaning in both the Preamble to the Constitution and the First, Fourth, Fifth and Ninth amendments. The Supreme Court has further maintained that given the fact the amendments making up the Bill of Rights were proposed and passed contemporaneously they (the amendments) should be read "in pari materia" -simply put, that amendments which contain similar language should be construed similarly.

American Legion invites public to join ceremonies
Memorial Day is the day specifically set aside each year as a national holiday to honor all those men and women who have given their lives in military service for our country over the 276 years of our nation's history.
We owe a debt of gratitude to those approximately 1,005,000 men and women who died while serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine of the United States that mere words cannot express.
In an attempt to express our gratitude to them and to all our veterans who have passed on to their eternal reward, The American Legion, Walter H. Burt Post 30, will conduct brief ceremonies at two area cemeteries on Monday. The first will be at Floral Memory Gardens in the Valor Section at 10 a.m. The second will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in the Veterans' Section at 11 a.m.
The public is invited to join us and to participate in both of those ceremonies.

It looks like Mr. Bush and his cabinet will take some flack from the anti-gunners. I won't call them commies, but sometimes I hope we react better when we lose a few battles.
It seems like it has been 63 years or so that the Second Amendment was raped by the other side. I think The Administration's views and values are right on target. The other side claims that we have the Administration in our back pockets. Well I've looked, and only moths have flown out of my back pocket, how about yours? I might be suggesting that the other side are sore losers? Like I said earlier, it is your character that is important, and that doesn"t start to show through until you go through some bad times, LIKE LOSING. I don't mean to rub it in, but they did lose a very large tract of ground. Like maybe the entire country. Now is the time for a mass attack upon the other side. You pick the topic, because they have false information to validate their side. Truth will survive the test of time ,and the untruths will fade with time. Folks I do think we should take our hats off to these mighty warriors, and support them any way possible. There are some fine names involved with American History, look around and be proud to associate their names with America.
