AMITE -- A state Division of Probation and Parole firearms instructor accidentally shot another instructor in the head during a training exercise at a firing range Tuesday, authorities said.
Terry Bridges was taken to Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite and later transferred to Baton Rouge General Medical Center, said Patti Giannoble of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.
Bridges is expected to recover, said Jim Rabalais, the district administrator for Probation and Parole in Amite, on Tuesday afternoon.
"He's going to be all right," Rabalais said.
The Sheriff's Office identified the instructor whose gun fired as Don Alexander. Both instructors are from Tangipahoa Parish, Rabalais confirmed.
More than 20 Probation and Parole officers were present when the accidental shooting occurred about 11 a.m., authorities said.
Instructors were giving a demonstration when an officer's firearm discharged, hittnig Bridges in the right side of the head, Giannoble said.
Officials said the demonstration apparently involved the drawing of a weapon, but complete details of how the incident happened were not available. A Division of Probation and Parole investigator is conducting an inquiry, Rabalais said.
The training exercise was being conducted at the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office's firing range in Amite, which the office allows other agencies to use for training, Giannoble said.
