Would you believe anti-gun money funds state's deer studies?

You should remember this group. They took credit for the firing of state game commissioner George Venesky.

Ron Freed was deeply involved in the Pennsylvania Conservation Alliance .

You should remember this group. They took credit for the firing of state game commissioner George Venesky.

The players consisted of the Audubon Society, Pennsylvania Trappers Association, the Pennsylvania Chapter of National Wild Turkey Federation, the United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Quality Deer Management Association and the Pennsylvania Deer Association.

We didn't hear much from Freed until the birth of the Habitat Alliance. In a recent newspaper interview, Freed was quite candid about his most recent endeavors. He also serves as a policy consultant for the Audubon Society.

According to Freed the Habitat Alliance was born with the intent of putting conservation and environmental groups together to repair the damage caused by whitetail deer. He admits the Habitat Alliance is not incorporated, and it doesn't have any staff or officers. It is a pure coalition of 32 different groups of which, seven are conservation groups. Freed admits he is actually a money facilitator for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Needless to say, this writer thinks the scenario opens serious legal and ethical questions. This financial arrangement is so peculiar the entire existence of the Habitat Alliance and their relationship with the Pennsylvania Game Commission needs to be investigated by our game commissioners and scrutinized by our sportsmen.

When Dr. Gary Alt needed money to fund his deer studies, the Habitat Alliance came to the rescue. By Freed's own account the Habitat Alliance secured $800,000 from five unnamed foundations to finance Dr. Alt. Another $300,000 is being added by the state's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission for a total of $1.1 million.

Foundations can not directly donate money to the Pennsylvania Game Commission because it is a government agency. The Audubon Society receives the money from the foundations, and Freed distributes the funds to the game commission. Interesting.

Naturally, the obvious question is who are the five unnamed foundations financially driving our deer research? Freed claims the foundations wish to remain anonymous, and he can not reveal their names. He states there are no groups in the Habitat Alliance opposed to hunting.

This writer tried unsuccessfully for months to determine the names and background of those financing our deer management programs. I think it is critically important to determine who is supporting the largest deer reduction program in the history of this state - and probably this nation.

Furthermore, the Habitat Alliance has not addressed nor admitted the effects of acid deposition on our forests. Their continuous theme is that only deer have created our forest problems, and we must find ways to repair the damage. Lacking a biological backbone for existence, the Habitat Alliance is an obvious political conglomerate, not a scientific task force.

Recently, I was able to uncover the names of three of these organizations. The Heinz Foundation tops the list, with the Bradley Foundation and the McLean Foundation as players.

The Bradley Foundation originated from the Allen-Bradley Corporation, the electrical component giant. Their thrust is the promotion of free enterprise.

The McLean Foundation is Canadian and theoretically contributes to Canadian projects only. I am uncertain how their money is working its way into Pennsylvania.

The Heinz Foundation is considered a giant at $72 million strong and the mother of all foundations. Teresa Heinz is the widow of the late Sen. John Heinz, and she is well known for her liberal views and generosity. She has established herself as an advocate of strict gun control laws. Let us say she was not a friend of gun owners in the Brady Bill debate.

My next question is how could one be anti-gun and pro-hunting at the same time? Is it not true we hunt with firearms? Eliminate firearms, and don't you eliminate hunting?

The ever-increasing influence of the Heinz Foundation and their financial strength needs to be very closely examined by our commissioners. Caren Glotfelty, our former Goddard Chairperson of Forestry at Penn State, now works for the Heinz Foundation and distributes grant money.

There is little doubt in my mind that Vern Ross has known from the onset that the anti-gun Heinz Foundation is the major financial player in our deer management program. I'm sorry, but Heinz involvement taints the entire objectivity of Dr. Alt's massive deer reduction program.

Deer management should have been financed from within the Pennsylvania Game Commission, not outside sources. Furthermore, Freed needs to reveal the remaining two foundations and we need to scrutinize their agendas.

Frankly, this entire story qualifies as scandalous and another Pennsylvania Game Commission debacle. I must seriously question the motives, professionalism and ethics of PGC executive director Ross.

To allow all of the above to continue unquestioned is a direct threat to hunting. Ross's sins are mortal. Our commissioners need to act decisively.
