FBI serves surveillance orders on two ISPs The FBI has served surveillance orders on two major US internet service providers to help in the search for clues to the terrorist attacks.Spokesmen for both AOL and Earthlink say they are co-operating with the authorities. The firms won't elaborate on what kind of information the FBI is hoping to find. The move confirms earlier reports that the FBI had begun stepping up electronic surveillance in the immediate aftermath of Tuesday's attacks.Although there are no details of the precise form the FBI surveillance will take, it is likely to involve the use of its controversial Carnivore monitoring system.Carnivore can be used to log email, web navigation and chat room conversations using the numerical ID tags that identify each computer connected to the internet. But experts are unsure how helpful it will be in tracking the perpetrators of the terror attacks.Mark Rasche of network consultancy Predictive Systems commented: "The FBI has always taken the position that the internet can be used to facilitate terrorist activity."But he added: "At this point, it's pure speculation on what role the internet or email may have had in carrying out these attacks."Carnivore can't locate previous internet communications, just current traffic travelling to and from the suspect internet address.Story filed: 15:27 Thursday 13th September 2001 http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_397779.html http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,5096919,00.html
