Sununu's Anti-gun Record Gun Owners of America E-Mail/FAX Alert8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102Springfield, Virginia 22151703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408September 20, 2001Dear Friend: Tragically, John E. Sununu has become to latest in a long line of politicians to attack the Second Amendment -- and then to attack Gun Owners of America for exposing his anti-gun record. Sununu has now produced a misleading letter intended to fool gun owners and obscure the nature of his record. Fortunately, the Second Amendment community is not stupid, as Sununu supposes. The following undisputed facts reveal the Sununu letter for the deceptive piece that it is: FACT #1: Sununu does not contest that he supported an anti-gun package consisting of virtually all of the Clinton anti-gun agenda, including: * background checks for private transactions at gun shows; * an import ban on semiauto magazines; * a lifetime gun ban for juvenile indiscretions; * the expansion to semiautos of the labyrinthine rules making it virtually impossible to legally teach your kids the safe and responsible use of firearms; * $50,000,000 in federal funds set aside to harass law-abiding gun owners; * an effective gun tax imposed by requiring you to purchase a trigger lock, irrespective of need. FACT #2: Contrary to Sununu's misleading assertion, Sununu's vote for final passage of the virulently anti-gun H.R. 2122 did not represent a choice between an anti-gun package and a more modest anti-gun package. Rather, it represented a choice between: * 90% of Clinton's anti-gun proposal; or * NO GUN CONTROL AT ALL. Tragically, Sununu chose 90% of the Clinton anti-gun proposal. FACT #3: Sununu makes a big deal of his cosponsorship of the House version of Senator Bob Smith's amendment which abolished the gun tax (H.R. 1460). However, had Sununu been New Hampshire's senator, rather than Bob Smith, this amendment would not have been introduced or passed. FACT #4: While Sununu has tried to partially atone for his support for virtually all of the Clinton gun package with occasional good votes on the Moran, Hostettler, and Hunter amendments, Sununu, unlike Bob Smith, has taken no affirmative actions to further pro-gun measures like Hostettler and Hunter -- or to defeat anti-gun measures such as Moran. Furthermore, it is no tribute to a politician that he votes only for those pro-gun measures which are so popular that EVERY SQUISH AND GUN EQUIVOCATOR supports the proposals as well. EVEN DICK SWETT SUPPORTED THE PRO-GUN POSITION WHEN HE KNEW HE WOULD BE IN THE MAJORITY. FACT #5: Unfortunately, some gun groups allowed their hatred of Martha Fuller Clark -- Sununu's last political challenger -- to blind them to Sununu's support for the Clinton anti-gun agenda. This does not change Sununu's anti-gun record. What is perhaps most galling of all is that Sununu has used your taxpayer dollars to prepare the mailing to try to deceive you. However, New Hampshire gun owners are too smart to be deceived by Sununu's propaganda. As Dick Swett -- who also believed he could fool New Hampshire gun owners -- can attest, Granite State voters are aware of their congressman's record -- irrespective of the efforts made to obscure that record.
