ARMED police surrounded a gunman in a West Wales village yesterday - then discovered he was going rabbit shooting.
The armed response team were sent to Llangennech, near Llanelli, after a 999 call saying a man was walking through the village brandishing a rifle.
Four armed officers from Dyfed-Powys Police surrounded the man on nearby farm land and ordered him to lay down his weapon and give himself up.
But the panic subsided when the man wandered over and explained he was shooting rabbits.
He had permission to be on the land and was released without charge.
A police spokesman said, "We advised him to carry the gun in a case in future and to let us know the next time he plans to go out at daybreak armed with a rifle."
The latest incident comes just a week after Dyfed-Powys Police paid ?24,000 compensation to 12 people who were wrongfully arrested while feeding ducks.
The force paid ?2,000 to each of the 12 people in an out-of-court settlement in the second case of its kind in recent years.
The incident occurred on the morning of May 1, 1999, when 12 friends, on a country outing, stopped to feed ducks and swans on a lake near Crickhowell.
Several police officers were patrolling the area and arrested the group, saying it was to prevent a breach of the peace because a hunt was taking place nearby.
The 12 accused the police of wrongful arrest and imprisonment after they were taken from the lake, driven to Brecon Police Station and held for more than five hours.
One of the group, Paul Stone of Newport, said, "I hope the outcome of this case serves as a lesson to the police."
Last year seven people were falsely arrested by Dyfed-Powys Police while eating lunch near Sennybridge Hunt.
They were each given ?3,000 compensation by the force.
