'Guns-For-Criminals' Bill; Would Allow Felons to Carry Firearms

WASHINGTON, July 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Brady Campaign to
Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March, today
criticized the passage of Massachusetts House Bill 1087, which
would allow non-violent felons and those convicted of violent
misdemeanors to regain their eligibility to possess and carry
firearms. The measure now moves to the Massachusetts Senate.

Introduced by State Representative Timothy J. Toomey, under the
misleading guise of "further regulating the use of firearms" for
"public safety," H 1087 would undermine landmark gun control laws
passed in 1998 by weakening the prohibitions affecting the ability
of violent criminals to own and carry concealed weapons. As a
result, individuals convicted of assault and battery, including
thousands of people found guilty in the past of crimes of a
domestic violence nature, would now be eligible to own firearms.

"We are extremely disappointed in the Massachusetts House's
action today," said Michael Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign
to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March.
"Massachusetts has always been a strong leader in common sense gun
legislation, with some of the smartest gun laws on the books. Since
when does allowing a convicted felon to buy a gun increase public
safety? We prevail upon the Massachusetts Senate to defeat this
dangerous measure."

The passage of the "guns-for criminals" bill is especially
disconcerting because it comes on the heels of a sharp increase in
gun violence in the Boston area. Just last week a 10-year-old girl
was killed after being shot in the head as she walked down a
neighborhood street. She is Boston's 26th homicide victim this
year, a drastic jump from 2000, when there were 39 victims for the
entire year.

"Representative Toomey introduced this legislation because he
felt the current prohibition punishes law-abiding citizens for
'minor offenses'," said Barnes. "By definition, a convicted felon
is not a law-abiding citizen. Massachusetts voters deserve a clear
explanation of why their elected officials are undermining their
wishes and essentially, exposing them to the dangers of gun
violence."
