The small-bore rifle carried by a competitor at Camp Perry is a sophisticated firearm. Consider the price of a boat or a pair of water skis, and shooting equipment is not so expensive.
"On a scale of 10, the old squirrel rifle behind the broom closet door would probably be a 1," said Harris. "The small-bore rifles at Camp Perry would be an 8, 9 or 10."
Harris began shooting as a youngster, picking up a .22-caliber rifle for the first time at Boy Scout camp.
"I was hooked right away," said Harris. "I ran out of money for ammunition, and that was when ammo was a penny a shot. I didn't shoot muzzle-loading rifles until I was pressed into service to direct the matches. Now, I have my own black-powder rifle, and I'm trying to find time to shoot."
The NRA is known for fighting for gun rights. It is also the leader in competitive shooting. The number of shooters at the National Matches increased 6.6 percent last year, said director Gil Gilchrist of the NRA Competitive Shooting Division.
Visitors can expect hot, windy weather along Lake Erie during the competitions.
"It is an extreme challenge," said Harris. "Therein lies the fun of the competition. If it were easy, it would not be as much fun. Camp Perry, above all else, is a very fair range. It treats every shooter the same way."

"If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege." - Arkansas Supreme Court, 1878
