Teen guns for world record
By MICHELLE MARK, CALGARY SUN
Gunslingers and sharpshooters won't want to mess with young Alanna Blinn.
The 17-year-old Cochrane girl -- dubbed the Sweetheart of Fast Draw -- has just smashed another world record as one of the fastest guns alive.
Placing second by a mere 4/100ths of a second in the world fast draw competition in Dayton, Ore., over the August long weekend, a humble Blinn said she's just happy to have competed.
"To be there is quite an accomplishment," said the high school honours student and president of the Bearspaw Fast Draw Club.
"You work so hard to get there, it's just so exciting even to be in the top five."
"My goal is to place well -- I don't really care about being number one as long as I do my personal best."
With her father Darryl working as a firearms trainer for the provincial government, Alanna shot her first gun at the age of four.
She didn't pick up a gun again until seven years later.
"I had her pick up a gun at such a young age to take the novelty off and so she'd learn that a gun isn't a toy," her dad said, beaming with pride at his daughter's accomplishments.
"Dads are always proud of their kids, but she's a really nice kid.
"She's the sweetheart of fast draw."
Initially struggling to compete against shooters decades older than her, Alanna has recently come into her own in the world of fast draw.
Last year she broke 12 world records and now ranks third in the entire world.
In last weekend's competition, Alanna managed to squeeze off an alarming five shots at a 10 ft. target in just 1.7 seconds.
But her focus is also on fun.
"It's fascinating all the different people you meet doing something like this," she said.
"It's just fascinating."
Earlier this year, Alanna gave hockey great Jarome Iginla shooting lessons at a fundraiser for Juvenile diabetes.
