MONESSEN - Call it bravery - or plain stubbornness. Call it what you want, but Edith McCullough has it.

And because of that, you certainly don't want to try to rob the B&S Lounge.

At least, that's what Robert Thompson reportedly found out Tuesday.

Thompson, 37, of 438 John St., Braddock, allegedly en-tered B&S Lounge at Oneida Street and Schoonmaker Avenue, at around 6:30 p.m.

Thompson tried to go behind the bar where McCullough, 38, was working as bartender. McCullough, however, blocked his path.

Thompson told McCullough he had a gun and wanted money. He also said if the woman didn't give him what he wanted, he would hurt her and two children who were in the establishment playing video games.

However, McCullough stood her ground. Instead of giving in, she demanded that he show her his weapon.

Thompson, who had his hand under his shirt, refused to show a gun and again attempted to get behind the bar. McCullough continued to block his path and demanded to see a gun.

At that point, Thompson reportedly became frustrated and fled from the establishment on foot - apparently without a cent from the bold bartender.

McCullough phoned Monessen Police, who responded within seconds.

After getting a description of Thompson from McCullough, officers Jeff Frolo and Ed Lyons embarked upon a search. Moments later, Frolo found Thompson and arrested him.

Following arraignment on charges of attempted robbery, terroristic threats and criminal attempt to commit robbery, Thompson was lodged in the Westmoreland County Jail.

Smith Co. Teen Killed in Attempted Robbery
Bernadette Berry just planned her youngest son's funeral.

Leslie Berry, 19, died of a shotgun blast to the head.

Police say he used a rock to break into the Grant Community Store around 1 AM last Sunday.

A neighbor heard the commotion, and called the store's owner, Billy Hall, at home.

Hall drove to his store, and confronted Berry with a shotgun.

"He wouldn't respond to anything I told him to, just kept moving around in here. I was afraid for my life. I shot him", said Hall.

Hall says he fired a single shot, and Berry ran out the back door, through the grass, into the highway, and collapsed several hundred yards down the road.

Doctors at Vanderbilt Medical Center could not save his life.

Police found a trail of money and cigarettes leading away from the store.

Detectives will present their evidence to the District Attorney General, but they've decided not to charge the store owner with a crime.

"We didn't arrest him. He was there defending his property", said Smith County Sheriff Johnny Bane.

Berry's mother says her son was shot in the back of the head, and there's no way he was a threat to the store's owner.

"There is a skunk in the air, and it's coming from Smith County and they can take it any way they wish. I don't know what happened. I'm not going to speculate on what happened", said Berry,

"All I can tell her is I'm sorry that he's dead, but he was in the wrong place, and was doing something he shouldn't have been doing, and it put me in an awful bad situation. I didn't know whether he had a gun or didn't have a gun", said Hall.

Man arrested on charges of kidnap, menacing
A Pendleton man arrested by Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies on Monday has been charged with first degree kidnapping, second degree criminal mischief, and three counts of menacing.
Just after 8 a.m. Monday, sheriff's deputies responded to a disturbance on North Beaver Valley Drive in Seal Rock. The complainant reported that a male acquaintance, Veril Henry Phelps, 50, of Pendleton attempted to force him out of his vehicle and then chased him as he drove home.
As deputies arrived at the scene, they observed Phelps flee in a vehicle. The deputies gave chase, but Phelps eluded them.
At about 3:45 p.m. that same day, Lincoln County Communications, the emergency dispatch center, received a 911 call that Phelps had returned and was threatening the victim with a two-by-four board. The victim had fired a handgun at Phelps' feet in self-defense.
Phelps again fled in his vehicle, however he was located by deputies a short time later. While being taken into custody, Phelps refused to follow the deputies' commands, and pepper spray was used to subdue him. He was then taken into custody without further incident and was lodged in the Lincoln County Jail. Bail has been set at $130,000. http://www.newportnewstimes.com/nt_news/general/nt_news-10.html
