August 17, 2003 -- DEER management permits (DMP) will be available at the point-of-sale starting tomorrow through Oct. 1. No need to rush down there; 640,000 permits will be available this year and they are not on a first-come, first-served basis.
DMPs will be issued by random selection determined by the number of applications expected for each Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) and the number of permits the DEC wants to issue for each WMU.

A hunter's odds of being selected for a DMP are the same every day through Oct. 1.

Documentation needed, application materials, and additional license and permit information can be found on DEC's Web site at www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/license/index.html, or by calling the DMP/Sporting License Hotline at (866) 472-4332 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Additional changes to the DEC deer management and hunting, fishing and trapping policies made in the last year also include the Game Harvest Telephone Reporting System, which the state says has undergone major revisions since last fall, including increased phone lines and improved reporting software.

On July 3, Gov. Pataki signed legislation which, in addition to providing other benefits, provides free big-game and small-game hunting, fishing and trapping licenses to New York residents who are active members of the organized militia and U.S. Reserve, including the National Guard. For more information call (866) 472-4332.

Sampling of wild deer from across the state is under way, and to date the DEC says it has tested approximately 1,250 deer for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

No cases of CWD have been detected.

There is still a restriction on deer feeding, and a restriction on importation and possession of certain animal parts and carcasses.

Whole carcasses or carcass parts from wild deer and wild elk taken in 21 eastern states and six eastern provinces of Canada where CWD has not been found are exempt from this restriction.

The full text of the regulation, including the complete list of states and Canadian provinces exempted from the import restriction, and additional information about CWD and DEC's surveillance program can be found at www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/wildlife/deer/cwd.html, or by writing CWD Regulations, 625 Broadway, Fifth Floor, Albany, N.Y. 12233-4754.
