Smith & Wesson gains distributor

SPRINGFIELD - Smith & Wesson has signed up another large distributor to handle its line of handguns.

The company reached an agreement with Jerry's Sport Center of Forest City, Pa., it said yesterday.

Jerry's is a chain of five stores and warehouses and is one of the largest wholesale distributors in the nation.

Jerry's has distribution centers in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Ohio and Newington, Conn.

"We expect it could be a significant amount of business," said Robert Scott, president of Smith & Wesson.

In November, Smith & Wesson announced that three new distributors had signed with the company, potentially producing orders of $4 million.

Smith & Wesson did not offer a dollar estimate for the new deal.

Jerry's was one of many handgun distributors that had been forced to choose between selling Smith & Wesson and Sturm-Ruger handguns.

Starting in the late 1980s, Ruger required distributors of its guns to stop selling competing lines, including Smith & Wesson.

Ruger dropped that requirement last year, freeing distributors to sign on with Smith & Wesson.

Jerry's had been a Smith & Wesson distributor before Ruger imposed the exclusivity requirement.

Scott said the company has gained sales from the signing of the new distributors last November. Orders were up before the announcement, as gun sales rose following Sept. 11.

Smith & Wesson has said its sales have been on the rise since - May 2001, when the company was purchased by Arizona-based Saf-T-Hammer Corp. from its British parent company.

Saf-T-Hammer Corp. changed its name to Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. in February. The company's stock (OTC: SMWS) rose 1 cent to close at $2.21 yesterday. William Freebairn can be reached at wfreebairn@union- news.com
