Hunters wary of two bills in Assembly proposing new restrictions

Some folks want to can canned hunts.
Anti-hunting factions would have pushed a bill through New York's legislative system if not for some timely alerts from the New York State Conservation Council and interested sporting groups statewide.
This past week, state legislators quietly received proposed bills A01728 in the Assembly and S2576 in the Senate, which would eliminate all hunting in confined areas in New York State.
NYSCC officials noted that this bill "could make it illegal for hunting on any lands, including active farmlands." As written, shooting woodchucks in a fenced garden area would be illegal. Shooting a box-trapped animal would be criminal.
At this writing, an amended bill (S2576-A) has been crafted, but both hunters and hunting preserve owners have apprehensions about further controls on hunting operations.
"PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is behind this," said Robert Vacanti, owner of Northern Whitetail Scents in Warsaw. Vacanti urges all hunters and outdoors enthusiasts to check on this bill and contact a state assemblyman or senator immediately to voice opposition to these proposed restrictions, which he and nearly 500 game farm operators statewide believe to be aimed not at regulating preserves but at eliminating many forms of hunting.
