Anti-gun Oakland Wants Your NRA Money

Anti-gun Oakland Wants Your NRA Money One of America's most anti-gun cities now wants your NRA money to help them with their homicide problem. For those of you who do not know Oakland politics, they were one of the first cities to pass a law against so-called "Saturday Night Special" & one of the first cities to outlaw handguns. However due to state pre-emption laws, these ordinances were struck down as unconstitutional in the 1970's & 1980's. When the California city could not win with local gun control they turned to their zoning & taxing power. Oakland liberals, in the 1990's, used zoning powers to prevent new gun stores from opening by taking away the "commercial" status of a building if it were to be used as a future gun store. By doing this they eliminated any new commerce in fireams, effectively leaving law-abiding citizens unarmed in the face of armed thugs. The final success of the anti-gunners came in 1999-2000, when the city used its taxing power to drive all gun stores out of business. Oakland imposed a 7 to 10% "business tax" on all purchases in gun stores, even on purchases of non-firearm items. This tax would apply to no other type of commerical store. Unlike a sales tax, this tax was to be paid by the gun dealer. It has been said the "power to tax is the power to destroy" & it was very true in Oakland as all the city's gun dealers went out of business within two years. And now they want your NRA money. City Manager Robert Bobb is considering to ask for $200,000 to $300,000 of NRA money to publicize "Project Exile" in an effort to reduce the homicide rate. The NRA has been giving grants to cities in many pro-gun states over the past 18-months. One argument could be made that such a jesture by the NRA could win over support for gun owners, showing a positive image of the gun community. The other argument is that no matter how hard gun owners try, some areas of this country will always hate gun owners, so why waste our money. The NCRF believes if gun control is so sucessful (as liberals say), let them use their laws, not our dues money. Let's keep our money for the defense of the Second Amendment, not these anti-gun liberals. http://www.nationalccw.com/
