Utah Challenges Mandatory Guns LawAssociated PressVIRGIN, Utah (AP) -- This southern Utah town' s year-old ordinance requiring a gun and ammunition in every resident' s home violates state law, the state attorney general said. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said state law limits the authority of municipalities to pass their own gun laws. Shurtleff wrote Mayor Jay Lee a letter saying the ordinance must either be repealed or amended to leave only the portion prohibiting discharge of firearms within the town limits. Lee said he did not want to comment until he had read the letter. Most of the town' s 350 residents already owned guns and had expressed fear that their Second Amendment right to bear arms was under attack. The mentally ill, convicted felons, conscientious objectors and people who cannot afford to own a gun are exempt. Copyright 2001 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
