Citizens with guns would deter lawless I'm writing this after reading Nina Brook's Aug. 30 column, "City's another victim of tragic crime spree." Ms. Brook is correct that the death of Michael Messer, the shooting of Richard Ferguson and the armed robberies of the other victims is indeed tragic.Ms. Brook also points out that the city of Columbia was quick to respond to the tragedy by increasing police presence in the area. The calls for better lighting should be listened to. Perhaps these actions will help to prevent others from becoming victims.I would like to add one more thing that citizens of South Carolina can do to help prevent themselves and others from becoming victims of the lawless. South Carolina law allows for its citizens to carry a concealed weapon by taking a training class and passing a criminal record check. The law has many restrictions on where a permit holder may carry a weapon. I call on the Legislature to pass changes to the current law to ease these restrictions. These changes may not provide complete protection from criminals, but it would certainly be much more effective than a few extra police patrols and better lighting in one small section of the city.DONALD MURRAYWest Columbia
