Delivery man foils home invasion

June 27, 2002

BY ANA MENDIETA STAFF REPORTER
Bolingbrook police Wednesday credited a bottled water delivery man for foiling an attempted home invasion in which a man forced himself into a home and confronted a woman with a gun.

A 33-year-old Plainfield man was arrested by Bolingbrook police Wednesday in connection with the home invasion, Bolingbrook police said.

The man allegedly forced his way into a home in the 1300 block of Waterside Drive in Bolingbrook about 11 a.m. Tuesday and confronted a 32-year-old woman inside with a handgun, officials said.

As the gunman fought with the woman, a Hinckley Springs delivery man on his regular rounds arrived at the home and interrupted the incident, authorities said. The gunman then ordered the delivery man into the home, and the woman was able to escape, police said. After a confrontation with the gunman, the delivery man also escaped through the rear door. The gunman fired one shot, but no one was struck, police said.

The woman was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released, and the delivery man was treated by Bolingbrook paramedics on the scene, authorities said.

The gunman, who was in police custody Wednesday night, will be charged with home invasion, attempted armed robbery, residential burglary and armed violence, Bolingbrook police said.

Bolingbrook police were assisted in the investigation by the DuPage County Sheriff's Canine Unit and the Illinois State Police District 5 Air Unit, police said.
