Man hurt in attempted robbery of pawn shop
A man was in critical condition Thursday after he was wounded in a shootout with employees of a southeast Dallas pawn shop.
The unidentified man was taken by helicopter ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital from Mesquite Community Hospital, about six miles away, where he reportedly went with another man after the shooting.
Workers at B&B Pawn in the 8700 block of Lake June Road were not hurt in the attempted robbery, which occurred at about 2:30 p.m.
Police said the wounded man and his companion were in custody Thursday, but officers were still looking for a third suspect.
Store general manager Arch Whitman, who was working at another pawn shop during the incident, said two employees were on duty during the attempted robbery. He said it was not clear how the shootout started.
"They had guns drawn when they came in," he said of the suspects. "They got separated from each other, then our guys got separated, and shots were fired."
Whitman said he did not know who shot first.
"It happened so fast," he said of his workers. "They don't really know."
Whitman said it's not unusual for pawn shop employees to be armed.
"Believe me, it's routine," he said. "People at the bank have an armed guard. Well, we're a bank, too. We follow under the same compliance laws for banking."
